Hi Bret, what kind of brake/clutch levers do you prefer on a GS? Thanks!

Master your motorcycle? Everyone who ever told me they mastered there bike ended up in a box. You live in harmony with it.

It's shocking to see how people ride in the mountains. Practice makes (almost) perfect. Focus on the vanishing point and be prepared to brake a little, or accelerate a lot. Be prepared for every bend to be 180°, or more, and for there to be a woman stopped in the middle of the road to take photos. Learn to lean your bike over, then you'll manage anything. Sports and touring bikes tend to run out of ground clearance, so get yourself an adventure bike; they're the fastest thing on the road these days 😊

Ok the blackboard chalk up is impressive Kinda reminds me of my Physics Pro years ago. Simplicity normally hits the target. Assuming the steering bars have a 19 degree horizontal gradient>>>>The rotation of the bars forward (ex factory settings) of say 2mm will heighten the bars to approx. 1cm 4mm rotation forward will heighten the bars by 2cm. The rider reach will obviously be affected too.

Amazing and useful video, thank you. I tried it at home. My only issue is that it isn't so simple in real life. The GS under Bret looks feather light like a minibike or a pitbike. Apparently his GS weights 1/3rd of mine. For my 1st trial I felt myself like bull in the china shop. I'd like to see how Bret teaches students, how he explains and how they develop.

I have looked up many helmet crash test results. You are right, a more expensive helmet does not automatically mean better protection. But there are huge differences in helmet performance. Generally, Snell helmets offer less protection than DOT-only or DOT/ECE. Snell helmets are too hard. A few years ago, I looked up test results for my Schuberth S2 (DOT and ECE 22.05) and my co-instructor's Shoei RF-1400 (DOT and Snell). Schuberth: 81 g in frontal impact (the most common impact according to COST 327). Shoei: 123 g, a 52 percent harder impact! Regardless of the certification, not all helmets are the same.

the world needs more 650 adv bikes, so many manufacturers are completely dropping the ball by not offering these affordable more approachable 650cc bikes. BMW goes straight from 300cc to 850cc 😂 so dumb. Talk about leaving money on the table, huge market for this displacement imo

Great trick with the sockets. The finish on many rims isn't durable enough to withstand direct contact with the tyre levers, so some sort of rim protection should be used - pieces of cut-up plastic can are ideal. I think your rims are anodised (durable), but not all are.

23 AT1100 DCT Im an old dirt biker going back to the 70s. I find this bike really heavy, (im old) obviously its not a KDX or a YZ125, CR 250... AND YES, my foot went to the rear break immediately. I found out the day i picked it up from the dealer. DO NOT GIVE THIS BIKE A REV sitting at the light. Lol. My foot stays on that rear break and its being used far more than the front. The front is now highway and speed use only. **There's a Honda OEM foot shifter im gonna put on. Which operates by plugging into CPU paddle shifter circuit. (Id imagine it's, up up up, down down down) AND you are 100% correct about left hand break to rear, and now that you said it, im gonna find some old motorcycle mechanic to devise this concept and make it work. That park break can simply be moved to the sub-frame or any other place. Thank you for the concept. As for my 23 AT. ADV SPRT. I love this bike. For an old arthritic guy. Ive never rode such a comfortable bike. And ive had everything. The ergonomics is perfect. The ability to stand fully upright. First thing i did was loosen the bar bolts and push the handle bars forward. So standing is natural and weight forward. I'll never buy another bike for touring. This thing is the best. Thank you for your vid.

Great tutorial/explanation. If you think he's showing transitions into the oncoming lane, you are not understanding the diagram. The diagrams, generally, are showing the 'lane' that you are in! DA!

Have a dominator2 jacket. Love the jacket but do not recommend . The rubber on the chest vent gutter failed just after the jacket went out of 2 year warranty. Spare part was not available to have gortex specialist to fix and not considered part of the gortex warranty. I have just started wearing a krieger backpack and noticed that it would also not work well with the chest vent, blocking flow and potentially damaging the gutter. I am going for a Rukka instead. Not being able to get the VERY expensive jacket fixed or replaced, discovering the limit on Rev'its "guarantee waterproof for life of garment" only applying to the actual gortex membrane has put me off that manufacturer for good.

I come from a motorcycle and 4x4 Jeep background. The one factor you're not talking about here is speed which makes a huge difference. In the Jeep world I typically air down to 12-14 PSI on a 35" tire. When you do that you've entered a different world to what the tire was typically designed for. At those pressures the tire can no longer absorb the impacts or protect the rim at higher speeds, but at crawl speeds it's fine and the tire deforms significantly giving you better traction particularly on wet hard surfaces. The other main advantage is the ride quality inside the Jeep is night and day compared to street pressures. If you try to duplicate this in the motorcycle world, it just doesn't work out because you can't go slow enough. The tire has to have enough inflation to absorb an impact at the speed you're going. The faster you're going the more inflation required. The suspension and load play a big part too. If you try to go slow with significantly less tire pressure you may go outside the sweet spot of the suspension which will become harsh compared to higher speeds. If you're loaded up with adventure gear then the tires have more load and require more pressure. When I air down on the motorcycle it is almost exclusively to minimize deflection and I tend to stick to around 15% of regular pressures.

basically to simplify things, let off of the gas in a corner and brake gently with both brakes. dont accelerate until its safe to do so. learn to read corners. speed will increase w practice.

I hate steel grate bridges - absolutely HATE them - I have 3 bikes, feel good with NONE of them on steel grate bridges here in Washington State. Usually bumper to bumper, slow traffic that stacks up behind a light just before or after the crossing too. Great topic Bret - thanks for what you do…

It's PRECISELY because I didn't have this technique that I got "bitten" by a curve... fortunately I wasn't going fast and it was into soft grass. What it did do was force me to research cornering and discover "trail braking". If I could tell ppl passing the MSF course only 1 thing, I'd tell them to study and learn trail braking.

Thank you for the very informative video Bret, much appreciated! I do have one question, when you were showing the lines (with the blue/red chalk) it seems that you are illustrating a line to go into opposing traffic? I can understand this approach for a track/closed course but why are we not showing the lines as if we are in regular traffic as several sections of the video are showing?

You have to remember which pocket everything is in in the Badlands, i "lost' my wallet😂 was in a pocket behind another pocket. . I'd put it in the one behind the tracker picket instead oif in the "Napoleon " pocket. I love the kidney belt, it gives great support and takes the weight of the jacket off the shoulders.
