"The wizard's guide to defensive baking" sent me on a quest to figure out what a hornpipe dance was. I am not disappointed!

I remember watching boys dance the hornpipe. 50 years ago. No more it seems. Thank goodness girls are keeping it alive.

First went fishing 1961,on a 50 foot boat called the Fertile, she was a herring skiff, but we used her for seine netting .she had a small box wheelhouse ,and the winch lay fore and aft, just the fore side of the wheelhouse, you had to tow the gear till the ropes were closed the you swung the boat on to her port side and put the engine in neutral, and turnrd a metal wheel and tightenrd the belt up which started the winch up.put the throttle up and hove up the gear [rope/net ]on the broadside.which was fine when it was a good day,but if it was a coorse day the skipper had to be ready too ease the throttle back when a big yin [wave] came along.manys a time ye had too hing on!! worked out of Eyemouth back then...

The fishing side of these boats is okay but it's their later use as small gentleman's yachts after the year 1920 that lends them yet greater appeal. Steam and motor power had taken hold by then and new motor boats were being crafted for fishing. The 1960s British PM Edward Heath who took Britain into Europe through his German connections, was one of the first buyers of today's ubiquitous plastic hull yachts of the tourist Marina. Anstruther has the fabulous original wooden Working-Boat Yachts as well, crewed by a few middle-class sailing yachtsmen and Andrew who talks in the video, his talk might have included dubbing over some additional video scenes, but the resident (Assistant) Curator, Linda Fitzpatrick's husband wasn't available for the task. Fishing community Skippers and friends are mainly interested in these vessels as community motorboats, not sailing, that they find too demanding. The hollow Oregon Pine masts being added by the Boat Builder, Ali Beedie is a departure from tradition towards the 1940s gentleman's yacht, a very important part of the 20th century use of such boats. However the hollow masts are due the solid type splitting from use as a motorboat in rougher sea conditions. The elders reckon that the masts wouldn't split if the boats were kept to 8 knots by speed, but this rule has been neglected over decades and many masts replaced with no learning in evidence.
