my initial enlistment was 83-88. nobody knew I spoke italian; they were too busy jumping to other wrong conclusions until I had a full conversation with a supposed "linguist". I was born in italy, so my birth certificate is from the State Department.

I loved being a Marine. I got to travel to places like Okinawa, the Philipines, hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and my favorite place on earth, the demilitarized zone and I Corps in Vietnam. I got to eat very fine food in our mess halls. I miss it.

I was there the day you filmed this. Platoon 1029 from March 2 to May 22, 1987. You filmed our platoon on the parade deck with Sergeant Hughes hollering at recruit Bumgardner. It was the best decision I ever made besides marrying my wife. I can’t thank you enough for sharing this. It took me down memory lane, some good and some bad LOL

Thanks for sharing your time in the Corps. I was in from 1988 to 1992. I spent 2 weeks in Sigonella on my way to the Persian Gulf for Desert Shield in August 1990. It was hot but it was nice to see a part of Italy.

What an amazing video. Thank you for your service, sir. I don't know how I stumbled across this video, but I'm glad I did. I commission in 6 days, and I'm looking forward to the corps. Your video has inspired me to document the experience. Semper Fi Devil Dog

I went through during the Tet offensive. My platoon was full of street criminals and draftees. And we spent 3 weeks in the receiving barracks because enlistments had collapsed, and it took that long for MCRD to marshal a 75-man platoon. At first, I was convinced several of us would be beaten to death eventually. But then I figured it would probably just be me.

Heritage Ranch rocks !! I love that place !! I've got friends that live there and invite me all the time to visit ! I was there yesterday swimming and paddle boarding the lake at the boat launch area !! It's amazing that a place like this still exist in California !! Great people, super cool and nice ! That community there reminds me of what California used to be like ! Maybe the only place left in California or the whole west coast where freedom still rules !! Thanks for video !! 👍🙏

I went through MCRD from Jan 1987 to Mar 1987. I think you said this was taken in April of 1987. The lessons I learned in the Corps kept me alive and relatively uninjured during a 26 year career on the LAPD in one of the most violent areas. Semper Fi, Marine!

9:23 he is a sergeant that is E5 it seems to take much longer to move up. In 72 by early 75 had it in 2.5 yrs. I was 21 and still did not shave was not 6'5 and no one woukd have made me a drill Seargeant I would not have a voice today. Navy, just with the Marines who had to have so so much more forced discipline inspeections, etc

I wish they would build the courts like this barracks- No one wants to go there to c ourt and there are cisting more than a hospital because it is Govt Waste in action. Think it is The Oval Office everytime they put one up.

The guys in this video are pretty much the last Cold War generation. The last guys who joined expecting the nukes to drop. They grew up in the shadow of Vietnam and assumed WW3 was just around the corner. Within 2 years the war they prepared for got cancelled. I always wondered how they reacted to it. Relief sadness confusion? They grew up only knowing the Cold War. They had no memory of anything else. But unlike the older gen they still had a long life ahead of them to which they had to adapt mentally.
