just as a fun little tidbit - this is the first billboard #1 in 15 years to feature a key change in the composition (the second verse is in a different key and then jumps back into the original key in the chorus). it's such an amazing production trick and unfortunately it's super rare in pop music nowadays

Wow this video was really uncomfortable to watch. Chappell was sharing how free and safe she finally felt in a queer space after growing up in a place where being gay is so heavily ostracised, and your response was, “I’m fine with it as long as kids aren’t involved.” Why even bring kids into it? It’s upsetting that a lesbian woman talking about feeling safe in a drag bar somehow gets twisted into this truly disgusting and harmful narrative that queer people and spaces are predatory towards children. I honestly thought your guys' awkward discomfort around her being gay was just a joke at first - I mean why react to a lesbian artists music if you clearly dislike gay people? Anyway thanks for reminding me that not everyone is as accepting as I thought!

You took one point and twisted the narrative. We don't dislike gay people, being uncomfortable around chappell isn't the fact she's lesbian, it's the fact that some songs on the album are extremely sexual, which we don't outright dislike, but go and look at reactions to straight artists who are that sexual, and we're also uncomfortable. The reason we brought up kids is because there is a serious problem with kids getting involved with LGBT stuff at too young of an age to understand it. The most common form of that is involving drag in the lives of young children. When chappell mentioned gay bars and drag clubs, we aren't personally fans of those, but said so long as children aren't involved, chappell can do what she likes, which can pretty much sum up our opinion on LGBT issues as a whole

A love that took control of her, even with the good and the bad elements. She says she thought this song might flop and considered leaving it off the album. I think she only made this video because the song became so popular as the album was released 5 months ago. Video singles were not meant to be a focus from the whole-album concept. The director of 'Guess' remix video directed this. A video helps if you are in the running for song of the year too, even tho some wanted to see her with birds and flowers (which she does do in a video shown at her concert, singing it in a field of flowers.)

So, context: she *is* a lesbian but a lot of the songs on this album were written before she fully realized and came to terms with that, afaik. You can see the self discovery journey in her lyrics if you pay attention: from "why can't any man" in Femininomenon, to "I'm done with these lame men, I need a cool girl like me" in Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl, to her fictionalized first time with a woman in Naked in Manhattan, to her newest single Good Luck, Babe! where she sings about comphet... etc. You get the picture
