...and why is it like this? Curios to know. Since the video was made, newer fW has been released. Not sure if that had had any impact on the problem?

I don't understand. In my h1n it's just the contrary. Max noise happens at 10, and less towards 1. ????

Interesting. I watched another video with the H5 where they showed that the limiter only limited after converting to a digital signal meaning it clips, then its limited so you'd still get clipping, its just quitter clipping. Your example sounds great though. Not sure what to think.

If you are recording with lower db gain levels wouldn't the noise be automatically Lower? What am I missing with all this. I have this mix pre 3 and wish film an interior scene and want no background noise.

It is a very bad microphone that should definitely be avoided. How come a product that says "pro" is manufactured with a built-in, unchanging crappy cable? I've been having a pitch noise problem since I got it. The reason is probably that the cable is stuck somewhere. It is not possible to understand how such a product can be made without a jack (I can offer which has get it with a double-sided jack in the cheaper model "micro"). The second big problem is the plastic crappy battery cover, you have to wrestle with the microphone to insert and remove the battery. Worst battery cover I've ever used in my life. I would never have guessed that a battery cover could turn my life upside down so much. After about 10 uses, the tabs of the battery cover (naturally) broke and black electrical tape is holding the battery cover now. This product costs around 200 USD. Kindergarten children who aged 0-6 would have designed this product better than Rode. As for the sound quality, if I can ignore the ongoing pitch noise -which I can't- if you're making news, making documentaries or having the opportunity to connect it to something like a boom etc., takes the human voice fine, but not too much better than my zoom. its terrible design should definitely lead you to other options.

Could you give me some advice on making the choice between NT1 4th with AI-1 SET and a single NT1 5th since the price of theses two are almost the same. Thank you!

If your camera has a mic/line selection for the jack, choose line as it will totally bypass the cheap pre-amp and use the line level audio provided by the much better upstream H5 pre-amp.

to have even better performance, simply cover the sides of the fan to force the air through the fins. Without a cover on the side, most of the air will just escape from the side of the «wings».

I use a H1n (with attenuation cable) and Xenyx 1202FX mixer - home studio set up. I set my levels on the zoom as you describe but the gain for each track on the mixer is not used at all and the meter levels on the mixer barley go above the first green dots. The volume is low on the recorded tracks and I have to amplify the gain on a wav editor… Should I be finding a happy medium between the mixer gain levels and H1n or only use the levels on one or the other? If I do use the gain on the mixer then the gain on the zoom would have to be decreased.

you basically bought a new fan, to cut it down and mod the older shi tty one... i dont know man... it just seems like the case is now the issue, why not just buy the most expensive fan and replace it for that one? Since Intel stock fan is meh?

Julian, thank you for posting this information from which I have sustantially benefited. I did the recording according to your setting and it works like charm. I have a good question for you. I find the recording from A7 camera using H5 xy mic is sinificantly better than the recording from H5 recorder alone (w/ xy-mic). The notes were cleaner and have better definition. I thought the recording device inside H5 should do the better job. Do you notice that? If so, what could be reason?

Julian thanks for this information. Is the 12 dB increase in noise around the 5.5 position also measurable in the recordings that are recorded on the sd card of the zoom h1n? Or is it only measurable on the line-out output?

A very informative and insight-giving video. Yet, there are some points unclear: 1st, why did you plot the thermal(mic) noise as if it is linear? sqrt(4KRTdelta(f))is the thermal noise formula, making me think that the noise is proportional to the square root of the resistance instead of the resistance itself. 2nd point is when the two types of LNA noises are added to the signal; after or before the amplification. Thanks in advance, sir!

Please, consider firmware updates, released after this video was uploaded. Might be there some issues fixed. Mine H1n's firmware is 1.21 and I observe just linear noise increasing/decreasing and no jumps on 6 <-> 5 transition (just by simple headphone test).
2 жыл бұрын
Same here. I have 1.21 firmware and there is no recognizable white noise from 0 to 4. It started to increase around 5. Until the 6 it is still ok, but the 7 - 10 is just awful. I can´t imagine to record natural sounds with that amount of white noise.

I know this is an older video but I get terrible preamp noise with my H1N. Maybe the unit is defective. I mostly record very quiet natural subjects, though, and the hiss is present at all levels of gain.
