I especially like the part at 5:06 where you talk about the dowel plugs and you say you cut them flush except you actually show how you cut them about 1/4 inch longer than flush; and then at 6:11 where you said you "hand sanded" with a random orbital sander while everyone knows "hand sanding" doesn't involve any kind of power tool. NICE!!! You did all that to see if we were paying attention, right? Did I pass the test? lol

Don't pause when cutting wood on a table saw or bandsaw. The teeth will leave a groove in the edge, ALWAYS keep moving.. This is for future woodworkers because I figure in five years you've probably figured this out :)

Great video, however, I think I would have added a BLUE tint to the clear water layers, and made the bottom layer the darkest and then each layer a little lighter blue towards the top clear layer, it would have really shown the different depths better.
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jon, I actually started using pigment powder to create that effect but it was too cloudy. Would have been better with a dye.

Looks great but why not just do a one-off pour at the end of stacking and gluing all the layers?
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
I poured each layer because I wanted the depth to be suspended in the resin at each layer. Definitely would have been easier to pour all at once but wouldnt have been able to achieve the effect.

How did you get rid of the cloudiness in between resin layers after sanding? Looks awesome!
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! When you pour a new layer of resin it fills the scratches from sanding that cause the cloudy appearance.

Where did you get the jpeg file from?
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alyssa, I found the file on the DNR website. Ussually the fastetest option is to just do a google search using terms like "topo", "depth chart", "fishing map", "lake map" and the name of the lake. Good luck!

Hello. Great video. What are the dimensions of board and letters?
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
I typically make the letters around 3" tall and the width depends on the font (a bold font is important so that the letters dont break at a thin point). The base is ussually 1/2" bigger then the letters, so 4" by whatever width is needed.

How did you line it back up in the glowforge after each pour? Was it a guess, or did you leave the machine on the whole time?
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Hi Glenn, I just lined it up with the camera. I had the recangular outline and lake cutout set to ignore which helped with alignment.

Nice project and excellent outcome! I grew up in the home of a master carpenter who also used to occasionally do the real old school type of handcrafted woodwork items with hand tools as a hobby and for making friends gifts and I learned a lot from my pops; I used to joke that he could cut circles with a skill saw, lol. But with that said, I haven’t really done woodwork myself in years and thought about picking it up again, but I’m so out of touch with today’s woodworking technology that it’s not even funny… 🤦🏻♂️

this turns out so great! was it hard to hide the holes you drilled to fit the scroll saw blade through?
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Trevor. the placement of the holes is important but if you use a small drill bit and poition the holes thoughtfully they are difficult to see in the final product. It also helps to file and sand the letters after cutting.

At 13:04, it looks like you cut the keyholes in upside down, if the top of the growthchart is towards your logo.
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, the logo was actually at the bottom of the growth chart so the key holes were correct (though I have cut them upside down before). Nice attention to detail.

Awesome piece of art at the end! Question though... Why do you fill with epoxy in between every layer? Why not make one big pour of epoxy at the end?
@CraveCraft2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did each layer so I could engrave and paint the number representing the depth on each layer. Otherwise a single pour would have made more sense.

Well, I came here wondering how people get the bathymetric maps in vector format and was a little disappointed. I'm trying like hell to figure out where I can just get bathymetric GIS data for any lake i so desire to import into QGIS. I have about 30 tabs open right now but I am just failing. Some lakes are so big and complex I just cant imagine doing them all manually. Nice work though man, I like the idea of the depths engraved at the different layers, how did that turn out? Couldnt really see them in the video.
