Great playing Jacob. Love the tune too. Top end of the drum sounds amazing but felt it needed a contrast of a lower tone in the drum. But that's just me and my love of low end bodhrán tones. Merry Christmas.

Cheers Jeremy! This one is definitely a more top end/higher register type of track. I'll have to look at choosing the next track with a little more emphasis on lower tones just for you 😉 Check out Wasabi if you haven't yet as it may be slightly more your cup of tea. Merry Christmas to you too!

What mic are you using? Is the bodhran you're playing from Christian H? Great sound and dynamic!
@JacobMcCauleyBodhran Жыл бұрын
It's an AKG Perception. I've been using it off and on for probably close to 15 years now both in the studio and live and it's a fantastic mic for the price. Yes, the drum is a Hedwitschak. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions. Cheers!

It was a one-off drum and a collaboration between myself and the maker, Christian Hedwitschak, so unfortunately it's not a model that's for sale at this point in time. Lovely sounding drum though for sure. Needs a re-skin at the moment, but perhaps once that's done I can do a follow-up video as it will instead have a TwinSkin head which is now my preferred skin on all my drums.

@@JacobMcCauleyBodhran well, that's too bad. Any suggestions on another drum of his that sound as good as that one or close to it. I prefer the 16in bodhran and up. Hopefully you don't suggest one with the knot work that he did. I can't see spending $1,300 on a drum. I'm too afraid to pull the thing out LOL.

@chade2112 KZbin is not allowing me to respond to your comment for some reason so here is my response: It is 13" diameter and 12" deep. There have been other deep drums made, but none such as this featuring a more open design and a sound hole, which greatly improves the clarity of sound. As of this point it is just one-off drum, but there is a possibility for more research and testing to be done it. With advancements in skin technology (Twin-Skin) there are new possibilities for it as well.

@mrbodhranhead Thanks! You're right, Christian's work is superb. He never ceases to amaze me with his continuing innovation and constant top quality. Congrats on ordering a second drum from him! The new tuning system is great, and the Spicy skin will compliment that perfectly. Christian and I have some new projects on the go as well so keep an eye out for some new designs and some promo videos to go along with them. Thanks for your kind words about my playing as well!
@mrbodhranhead13 жыл бұрын
Lovely drum, Jacob. As usual, Christian's work is superb. He just sent me some pictures of my new drum (my 2nd from him). I also went with the new tuning system and the DragonSkin spicy. I elected just the regular depth, though. I can see the advantages of the deep drum -- it's just a bit much for me. I'll be posting video when I get my new one. Thanks, and BTW your top end technique is fab.

@kishanabear You're very welcome! I haven't had a lot of experience with double skins, as they aren't really suited to my playing. But the "beefy" sound (which I would describe as a full, well rounded but not overpowering) is not just the result of the skin, but also the frame, and the mic being used. I use a large diaphragm condenser, and with the design of the frame, the achieved sound is full, ranging from deep lows, to crisp highs, but no over-powering bass. All in all a great sound!
@kishanabear13 жыл бұрын
beautiful. this sounds a lot like a brenndan double skin. thick, beefy sound w/ great attack! thank you for posting.
@JacobMcCauleyBodhran13 жыл бұрын
@Copterdl Thanks very much! In terms of the Goatskin vs the Calfskin. In my experience it usually depends a lot on the skin itself (thick or thin, trasparent etc). Some skins can have more or less attack or live sound than others no matter which animal it is from. I have only played a few calfskin Bodhrans so I cannot fully comment as to if a calfskin is generally more live sounding. But I can say that the DragonskinSpicy has the most attack and full live sound that I have ever played.
@Copterdl13 жыл бұрын
Your techniques are superb! Question, I understand the dragonskin is made from a goat skin, does the goatskin have as live a sound as a calfskin timpini head? Some of the newer transparent heads are great. I have heard Lucy Randall play a Christian Hedwitschak bodhran and it sounds great, but I am wondering if it is as loud as a transparent calfskin like a alfonso drum? The reason I am asking is because I am considering purchasing one of these drums and currently play Alfonso's drum.
