Being on the crater rim of Mt Yasur, especially in the dark when the crater is glowing and the molten rock plus ash is flying around, makes for a pretty powerful experience. I think it commands a lot of respect! The lack of regulation is in many ways a breath of fresh air. Nice to see people being left to make their own decisions. On Tanna everyone has a machete in hand and even young kids have their own. Kind of like having a mobile phone in kiwiland. Apologies for all the wind noise in the videos we have been having camera issues but we’re getting there! Cheers, Adam and Vicki

Good morning folks. Not sure if you've read Maurice Cloughley book, "A World to the West," but when he and Katey anchored [Nanook] off shore, they described Tanna as being very active. (Think our own White Island.) I don't have the book in front of me, but either that night or the next, they experienced a pretty good shake. Just saying. 😮 By the way Adam, you're rocking a pretty good haircut there mate. I've been away from a signal, so may have missed something.? Knocked a good year off your age, eh.? Just a heads up, the local villagers appreciate gifts of fish, if you catch enough. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. Much appreciated. Take care guys.

Hello @bryanbadger! As always it’s great to hear from you! Ah yes, the hair cut. After some discussions aboard it was agreed it best I do my own (my fault!) so I have been practicing. The one before last I was just doing ‘finishing touches’ but somehow buzzed a number 2 up the port side. I have a good selection of hats so it was all good. This time I was actually feeling very confident going in and did a duel length cut (that’s what I’ll call it), basically with shorter bits lower down. I think that’s how a professional hairdresser would describe the job. The funny thing is coming up soon is me cutting Vicki’s hair. The process starts with me doing some focused YT viewing re technique (refresher level training) and the clippers stay in the draw. Fortunately, much to Vicki’s relief, we felt no Earth trembling at Port Resolution (until we were standing at the crater rim of Mt Yasur!) Thanks so much for your support it means a lot to us 🙏 Cheers Adam

Hi folks. First of all as far as fishing goes, all fishermen will tell you the same thing, and even me old mate Confucius, has said...the only way to catch fish, is to have a hook in the water. There's nothing more useless as a hook out of the water. Added to that, "never waste a minute at sea." So straight out at the stern, and even if you jibe, it won't tangle. Your rolling at anchor is interesting. Sir Francis Chichester after launching Gypsy Moth 4...had the same problem. Which brought out the exclamation, "OMG..I've got a rocker." I don't have details in front of me but he added X amount of pigiron into G.M hull. This helped with the stability. Don't remember how much. It worked. Would this help in your situation.? Thank you again for sharing. Take care and all the very best.
@sailingtetaiko
@sailingtetaiko 29 күн бұрын
Hi @bryanbadger, thanks so much for commenting! It is hard to argue with that fishing advice! Get the line wet haha. A friend suggested adding a sinker above the lure to get it down a bit further below the surface. Whether that helped we will never know but we soon after had a tuna attacking the lure violently and it straightened out the stainless hook! Still no fish aboard… But a fight sufficient to keep us interested in fishing! We will keep trying. We’re a bit hemmed in with the wind but hopefully fishing again soon! Thank so much for watching and for your support! All the best, Adam and Vicki

Good morning guys from down here. Sorry about this, but I can't access the comment section, just the replies. Not sure why, and it's not your fault. I'll sort it. So just look on this as comments. Aaah yes, first world problems. Remember the good old days.? What happened to them. 😢.....Um ok the anchor problem.? My last yacht I owned, was a 15 tonne, 12mt Hartley Golden Cowrie, in ferrocement. And while based in the Marlborough Sounds, I just carried a Fisherman type anchor, for the reefs, in the outer Sounds, and as recommended to me, a Danforth in the inner Sounds. Basically a mud/shell base. It dealt with katabatic winds and occasionally williwaws. Two separate types. My point being, that my anchor self set itself over a standard setup....during retrieval. No reset swivel. I was able to have a stern line out so that helped. Amongst our liveaboard crew, were members of the Ocean Cruising Club, and they all, as far as I can remember, were unanimous in carrying the Bruce Claw type, as the go to/if in doubt/handy to have anchor to use on unknown seabeds, overseas. I don't think they had the self setting swivel included in the system. I could be wrong. I've been wrong before. (I think.)😂 Hopefully you're all good now.? Thank you for sharing folks. Take care and atb from down here.

Hi Bryan! As always thanks for following the channel and for your comments - we are really enjoying them! We are all good re the anchor situation. No further issues with resetting so far. We have full faith in the Rocna anchor. We have a physiology aboard to keep systems simple and I think the self righting swivel is an example of us adding something unnecessary, and even not recommended, over-complicating what could be a simple system. We live and learn and will keep striving to keep things simple going forward! All the best. Adam and Vicki.

Really enjoying the journey. So much so, have now gone backwards in time to watch your videos from the start. I find the pathway you have chosen and skills you have developed and honed very inspiring. On watching the back catelogue, I note you moved on fairly quickly from the Nova 28, as im also looking at this class as a starting point I would be very interested in your thoughts on the Nova 28. Thank you in advance.
@sailingtetaiko
@sailingtetaiko Ай бұрын
Hello and thank you so much for following the channel and for your comment here! We would highly recommend a Nova28 as a first keelboat. It’s a well proven design, is sea kindly, not too big to manage (sail area/loading, docking etc) when starting out. The reason we moved on to the next boat so quickly was that we bought the Nova to test if sailing was for us. We confirmed it was and listed the Nova for sale and it was sought out almost immediately as it turns out they are in demand. It sold way quicker than what we expected! And once we had a buyer we went through with the sale. Once we knew sailing was for us our next step was to get an ocean going vessel. If you are thinking of that step then definitely buy a smaller boat first as it takes first hand experience to learn what you want and don’t want in a vessel. It’s a big investment so the early learning helps chose the right vessel ultimately.

Thanks for watching and commenting. In Fiji, there’s definitely a cheap way of doing it if you’re prepared to make a few sacrifices and plan in advance. The best thing we did was we did a mega provision in NZ (particularly if you’re a meat eater) of food that was allowed to come into Fiji. Some things are expensive such as meat, alcohol, cheese and potato chips. If you shop at the markets then you can get fresh produce (limited in range as they generally sell what’s in season) at really cheap prices. For example we bought 5 Lebanese cucumbers for $2 Fijian. Marinas are also expensive. If you’re needing transport, buses are the cheapest way to travel. We would catch the bus to town to provision and then a metered taxi back to avoid carrying all our stuff in the bus. The metered taxis are a lot cheaper than the non-metered ones (who are often double the price) and they will also stop at various shops for you along the way back. Hope this helps.

Hi guys. Just had a bit of a laugh, at your expense. Sorry. Let's see. You're on saltwater, therefore in a salty environment, and your vessel is predominantly wind powered, equals salt spray. I'm subscribed to a lot of sailing channels, including the Hamils of "Cruising Kiwis" fame. Plus I have 100's of sailing books in my library, including the biggies, "Gypsy Moth " "Lively Lady", Suhaili...Dr David Lewis in catamaran Rehu Moana, dealing with major williwaws on the Beagle Channel, and "Icebird" passage to Antarctica, Rosie Swale, book "Children of Cape Horn" and I could go on. Oh yes, and not forgetting our own kiwi yachtsman, Andrew Fagan in 17ft "Swirly World" voyages to Kermadecs, double crossing of Tasman Sea, down to Auckland and Enderby Islands. As far as my memory goes, not once in these examples, was salt on windows ever mentioned. Please tell me, that you're just messing with us. If that's the case, I've given you a "like." @sailingtetaiko Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and this comment. We appreciate it! After the flipping incident, we had one pair of shoes left each, unfortunately (or fortunately) they were for different purposes. Little known fact about us though is that we are both the same shoe size which comes in very handy at times, such as this occasion. Thanks for the comment about using the mics, it's a very good point. We do have two Rode mics which have the fluffy things on them. The issue is we lost both our everyday Sony camera which we could attach these mics to when we sailed from New Zealand to Fiji (it fell in saltwater that had come in through the scuppers). We do have another camera which can use these mics but we tend not to bring it out now (after losing the Sony) when we're in these sorts of conditions so we rely on the GoPros but they can't use this mics - which is not ideal. We we will continue to work on this. Thanks again for watching. Adam & Vicki

Hello Bryan and thank you for your comment! The kiwi winter temps feel distant now but watching the systems rolling in from the Tasman I can appreciate what NZ has been experiencing. Regarding Nanuya Levu, we left there two days ago having stayed for a week sitting out 35 knot winds. I would regard it as the most protected anchorage we have been in in the Yasawa Islands. A main point that sets it apart from other anchorages on the Yasawas is the land at Blue Lagoon is low (30-40 m asl) so not as gusty as it could be if more hilly. Some uncharted reefs exist when entering from the west but nothing that can’t be figured out with aerial photos at the helm. Vicki finally got me to watch Blue Lagoon and we compromised on the 1980s version! Really appreciate your message feel free to make contact any time. Cheers, Adam

Thank you! Was a great passage overall but the last 24 hours were pretty rough but we still can't complain. We're fortunate to live in a time where we have good access to weather forecasting and Adam patiently waited for the right weather window. Thank you for watching.

@@sailingtetaiko yup weather windows are your friend when cruising no point in sailing through 40-50knot lows . I have met Adam as I reside from Opua :)

@Reece-wv5tx oh wow! It’s always nice to hear from people where we’ve lived. We’re missing it there but we still feel connected to New Zealand as that big high is exacerbating the trade winds and we’re hiding in an anchorage. Feels just like home!

Hi just started following you, and am wondering if you have an update on way you termed your prop speed failure, was it? Cheers Kevin

Hi Kevin, thanks for watching and following us. We appreciate that! Are you asking how our propspeed treatment is working since our application failure? Adam dove to check on it a few days ago and besides a couple of barnacles, it was looking good! Thanks for asking.
