Very nice. Beautiful job. Nice rich sound. With your playing style, using a 2 finger index lead with the thumb on the 5th string, you could easily play a Seeger style also with no real change in your style. Index on the melody, brush down on the strings, and then 5th string.

Thank you. I also really like this really old style of playing I’ve heard. I don’t know how to do it, but I’ve heard banjo historians playing it and I think it’s beautiful.

I learned a little about instrument making from a luthier friend, who also does a lot of scraping. He keeps a collection of scrapers of all shapes and sizes, all made from thin old carbon steel: old saw-blades, paint scrapers or suchlike. Usually the thinner the better. To sharpen such a scraper one raises a thick wire bead on one side of the working edge. So constant resharpening is necessary. On the other hand I learned from Criminal Revival YT channel that Stradivarius used thick, broken knife blades as scrapers. The fact that the blades had snapped showed that they were hard - perhaps too hard for fighting with but just right for scraping. I figured out a way to scrape with a knife whilst holding the blade, so that the thumb traces over the surface to be scraped and the blade trails. This provides a similar effect to using a wood plane, keeping the blade on a flatter trajectory than if it is run freehand. I made a video of this on my channe,l in case you're interested. Keep up the good work!
@@dongkhamet1351 thank you very much. I appreciate this information because I’m always trying to learn better ways.

@aaronflinner6431 that's my pleasure, I got a good feeling from your video. The neck looks great, I am curious about the shaping. Subbed so I'll find out more :D

More medieval English than Scottish, but never mind, quite nice. You really have to know a lot about Scottish folk music (especially regional traditions) in order to make up similar-sounding melodies. Not easy.

This is the nicest sound I've ever heard come out of homemade banjos like this, and I've been playing fretless banjos professionally for over a decade! I think a lot of folks who make homemade banjos get the wrong idea and try to string them with steel and tune them up high, which just doesn't work for this type of thing. I would love to see more banjos like this. The sound is incredible, and from what i can see, the action looks real nice too!

@ the pie tin one with the brown goat skin ($200 plus shipping), and the big one with the blue cake pan ($300 plus shipping) are for sale.
This is good, brother! I always use a real sharp knife like that in the same way (or a razor blade). I read that the old-timers would often use a sharp piece of glass to finish wood in the same way.
@aaronflinner64312 күн бұрын
The glass idea seems like it might be superior in some ways. It would hold a very sharp edge, and be easy to replace.
