My former junior school teacher must take a lot of credit for videos like this. He loved Northumberland and wisely knew it's potential for tourism. His name was Edwin (an old fabled name) Greaves. He made many videos, they must still be around, I bought some of them, what a great man...!

Very well done video. I absolutely loved my visits to Northumberland when I was stationed in East Anglia during the 80's & 90's.

I've never seen a film of Redcar showing Fun City. The camera always stops short. Somebody must have some film of it, or even just some stills.

The big Seabright Skiffs of New Jersey were remarkably similar to these and like them were launched right off the beach. This was the case up to the 1930's, though they still used them up to the 1950's when the Army Corps of Engineers made channels to the harbors behind the beach. They were lapstrake also and were made by and fished by mostly Norwegian Americans. They had an almond shaped flat section on the bottom which allowed them to sit upright. Often they used horses with carts to retrieve the boats in heavy surf, tractors in later years.

Pathetic tourism brochure. Who's the woman that can't pronounce the name of the place she's talking about, it not even in Newcastle or even Gateshead it's in a different county.

This is definitely 1960s. The children's marching bands was a big thing but much more so in County Durham. Redcar WAS a Seaside Town and travelling down the beach towards Marske you could find dozens of fossils or what we called "Devils Toenails". No Council Buses so everything was the Red United Automobile Services.

Having watched all of The Last Horsemen makes one humble and slows down everything. Both my Dad and Grand-Dad were horse-working farmers before they eventually had to start on tractors and trailors. John from Northumberland will always be a true hero in my memory. My he rest in peace, and may the God he believed in offer him a new an everlasting home.

I think 'Whin' here was used to describe the nature of the rock (dark and hard), while 'Sill' the shape of it. I haven't heard of the bushes you mentioned, but if they grow around hard rocks, it might be related, I think :)

I love this. We were up there so much as children in the 1960s and 70s with my parents particularly my father, who taught us how to count - yan tan tether nether pip I think is the Northumbrian version. Up there on the moors with no one around is the happiest I have ever been - no one around. Perhaps I need to buy a sheep farm or moorland.

Like much of Scotland, Northumberland looks like an unappealing grassy wasteland that was deforested a long time ago. Hopefully they start planting trees again so the region can get some of its forests back. I'm sure the region looked far more beautiful 2,000 years ago when it still was mostly forested.

A real disappointment and a con. This mainly concentrates on one fella and his memories of when he was a lad. I expected different clips from the North East and this is not what I got. Geordies may like it though.... but I don't.

The land is being sold for housing development. Well that's weird, why must we build more homes? The British birthrate is below replacement level, so it's clearly not to house British people! Oh, I forgot. Our net migration is in the hundreds of thousands per year. Foreigners erode our culture and traditions before they even arrive because we have to shut places like these and build on greenbelt land etc. to accommodate them. Then when they get here they don't integrate (CAN'T integrate), not that I's want them to anyhow. Country's going down the pan. What I would give to reverse our demographic trends even as little back as 2004.. Sad. British people and Britishness will cease to exist.

I really enjoyed watching this film, it is special & reminds us of how popular Redcar was with the local community & visitors from further afield. As a community we should work together to build that pride & interest again. Redcar still attracts a lot of people when the weather is good but we don't have enough interesting amenities in the right place. For example near the boating lake where the skating rink used to be & swimming pool. Our parks are run down & don't offer enough variety for young people. This film should be shown in our schools as it will inspire youth & all age groups to unite & take an interest in our history & future. Anne

Oh my holy fuck, Redcar now is only good enough for a WW2 film bomb site!!! The place is a Royal fucking mess! I used to love it as kid, but will probably never visit the shit hole it's become. It was clearly a wonderful place in the 50s 60s.

Interesting historically but what did these guys really expect about declining stocks, when old Ted Rum Bum and Backy Boy Heath, got Britain into the EU and coupled with the patheticly small minimum landing sizes, that ment the whole sale killing of immature fish on an unpresidented scale. Then quite frankly the commercial men of Britain can just go and cry in their beer, as they did sweet FA to stop it, which is what I predicted back in 1977. Still you can never educate the greedy even if you hit them in the face with the facts.
