Working on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad which was taken over by the Union Pacific it was always a thrill to go into the repair of shop and watch him work on engines and see them picking engines up of course that was in Proviso when I was on the road we used to have to pick up our engines at the repair shop need have it all ready for us we get on check everything over and take off and we hook onto our train and go to Clinton Iowa 43 years then I went on passenger spent my last 20 years on passenger

I'm a civil engineer (now retired) who has designed & managed multiple shops & yards projects for a commuter rail agency in Northeast USA. We have both diesels/coaches & EMU's (Electric Multiple Units) which run on both overhead catenary & 3rd rail. It's interesting to me that UP has maintenance positions that rely solely on the bridge crane to move whole loco's in & out of the position. I suppose it's for efficiency - the entire perimeter of the "spot" can house maintenance activities, rather than having an exit track. Also, no need for the building to have many large train doors & the large amount of space outside for track geometry (curves & switches). We would never consider doing something like that. All our maintenance spots are accessible with tracks running through the buildings (very rarely do we even have a "dead end" shop, most are run through). We have lifting jacks & rods in the floors to lift the car bodies off the trucks to access the traction motors & trucks themselves, then turntables to wheel them out. We also have an upper deck level for rooftop equipment (HVAC units, catenary pantographs). For the diesels, we have a 3-axle drop table to remove the trucks/motors, in lieu of the jacks/rods. We do have overhead cranes, in fact rated strong enough to lift a whole unit (diesel / coach / EMU, depending on location), but it's never done in actual operations, it's only for an "emergency". Management wanted that, but the actual shop guys say they'd never trust any rigging plan they could come up with. The newer generations of rolling stock are all "component" in nature, ie, you roll out the trucks / motors & roll in a replacement, same w/rooftop units, send the vehicle on it's way after an hour or so in the shop. Vehicles do not sit in a shop for any length of time, unless for body damage from an accident. Of course, our operations are not at the scale of UP's. We have 500 EMU's, ~100 coaches, a few dozen diesels, actual numbers of diesels / coaches vary as they are in a "pool" with neighboring operators (our line is nearly unique in the world in having both overhead catenary & 3rd rail on the same line, requiring vehicles that use both).

Overhead Catenary and Third Rail? Is it the S-Bahn Hamburg?
@sideshowbob
@sideshowbob Жыл бұрын
@@Genius_at_Work it's the New Haven Line, one of 3 lines operated by Metro-North (commuter rail lines north of NYC that go into Grand Central Terminal). There is also a Tube line in London that switches over at a station (stopped). Our trains switch over "on the fly" just north of Mount Vernon interlocking, which I believe is an "only in the world" (didn't know about S-Bahn, Wikipedia is my Friend, thanks!)

The crane has rail marks on its own track where the crane needs to be to set locomotive down centered on floor track. There may also be proximity switches and light panel to let crane operator know when good to drop.
