The last 4/3 Olympus with Kodak CCD sensor (10 MP) was E-400, however it differed a little bit from the one used in E-1 / E-300 / E-500... and Leica M8, as it is the same sensore in the APS-H size :) Great video, thank you!

4:04 Pardon my ignorance. But what do you mean by the color science being clinical? I've come across this word a few times in comments and forums, and I don't quite understand what it means in the context of photography/photos.

I'm sure you could get a better explanation from someone smarter than myself, but to me it means that the image is well exposed, sharp, and has plenty of dynamic range, but that it lacks character. A lot of the time the colors are bland or muted. Its like specs over soul. Some older cameras may not be as technologically advanced, but they provide better colors and a special quality to the image. Some would even include micro-contrast. I hope that helps!

Currently considering a few options. I find myself sometimes with extended tripod legs at awkward angles = not so solid with available light. Because of this I'm interested in inherent mechanical vibrations and stabilisation. What does the 645D (and Z if you know) have to limit vibrations say long mirror lock up to shoot delay, maybe shoot without shutter & mirror movement, and does dynamic range suffer if that's available? Are we getting to a time that the electronics on these will be starting to materially fail?
@ColtonMatocha
@ColtonMatocha 2 күн бұрын
The 645D does have a mirror lockup feature and both a port for a wired remote, or a sensor in the front and back for wireless trigger. There is also a feature called Shake Reduction, however I'm not sure what exactly that does since this camera does not have in body image stabilization. I will say that hand held at 1/125 using the 120mm lens I have been able to regularly get sharp images corner to corner. I don't think this camera yet suffers from age, however, I believe the shutter mechanism is only rated to 50k clicks. I think the 645Z is rated to 150k. I also have several cameras from 2004 & 2006 which do not exhibit age issues. On the other hand I have a camera from 2008 which died of a sensor malfunction.

@@ColtonMatocha Thanks for the reply. Shake Reduction is intriguing , definately something to look into. Did not know about the low shutter rate, but thanks for the information. So there isn't a pure electronic shutter where there is no mechanical movement? 👍

As a long time Pentaxian, who has also shot stills and video on other brands, I'm completely 'not surprised' at these results, especially how much work was needed to get the Sony to be colour-accurate. "Sony Blue" is a nickname in TV production for the colour cast on all Sony cameras, they've gotten much better in the last 5 years, but still nowhere near as accurate to the real world colours. The 654D may feel slow compared to other digital bodies, it was faster then manual wound medium formats, and it's more then fast enough for people that compose their shots, rather then the Spray n Pray crowds insistance on finding the buffer limits with every burst.

It's a big camera according to most 'stills' shooters, but from personal experience with SLR's, Camcorders, DSLRs and Cine Cameras, the 645D has great ergonomics, amazing balance, and enough heft to give it the inertia to help keep it stable when gripped properly. Colours are fantastic, and the CCD (just like it's baby brother the IstD) has something special about it that are really fantastic for doing Nature and Portrait work.

@@ColtonMatocha Look closer at my icon,... yeah, I have two of those,.. and six other Pentax's. The model in my icon, is the only Pentax to ever have bad ergonomics, but it was "designed" by Marc Newson, and not by a Pentax engineer. And speaking of the engineers, thoughts on the new "17" model? There should be a range finder coming, as well as the new SLR, thanks to the old engineers coming back in and teaching the current ones how to build Film bodies.

I'm in the process of selling one of my drones to help finance a purchase of a Mamiya 645. The other medium format camera I own is a 1951 Voightlander Bessa II 6x9. Some of the best images I've ever captured were from this camera. Hi Colton! Sound like a great plan and goal setting! I set some small goals this summer. Shot my first cartridge of Super 8 film and getting another cartridge soon. Doing portraits for the first time too. I have not done much people or street photography. Doing less gear shopping and doing more production. I usually do nature, architectural and macro photography. Also got some 35mm film, using some old rangefinder and 1/2 frame cameras as well. I agree that trying to stay focused on and make the most of, the gear you already own is a goal of mine too. The E500 has more options to filter black and white within the camera (you can set, red green yellow orange filters), you can custom balance your color profile witch you cant on the E300, you could have the E300 for color and the E500 for B&W ready to go. I also notice a difference in metering. And you can set an ISO limit in auto settings I believe on the E500. Which you can't on the E300. (And yes the E300 due to the very different internal build, is twice as heavy :-) , the menu is extremely basic, much more useful on the E500. Both are very close with regards to image output. Often I find the E300 jpgs out of cam, slightly more contrasty and a bit more predictable.
@ColtonMatocha
@ColtonMatocha 28 күн бұрын
Yeah I agree with all that. The E500 is definitely intended to be the step up from the E300. The menus and level of control that are available in the E500 are better. I'd agree that image output is pretty much the same with RAW files. While the E300 is a fun camera, I do find myself using the E500 much more often because of the better overall experience

Watched the vid at 03:09, minutes after it was uploaded. Wrote a suitably pithy and disparaging comment but my laptop crashed just as I was about to post. Wish I could remember what i said.... Anyway: late '60's early '70's there was an art movement that incorporated bodily fluids (etc) into their works. Controversial is not the word. There was a Japanese exponent (can't remember who). He laid a canvas on the sidewalk and hit it at something approaching terminal velocity by launching off the top of a building. Although the artwork was never formally signed, it's authenticity is readily established through the use of forensic techniques. The Japanese Govt. confiscated the work and it's quite hard to track down information on the Artist and compositional process. Personally, I find the whole episode quite magnificent - I have no 'personal heroes' but, were I to succumb to that blight, this fanatic would be top of my list. Oh yeah... that's right - the reason I mention this is that you said in your video that you were looking for ways to make your photography more interactive. So, just a thought - have a great day!💀

Thank You for this very interesting video ... I had the same idea to go back to CCD ... Did you made test about dynamic range ? is it possible to share a few raw files ?

I'm glad you liked it! I haven't done a specific dynamic range test, but I have found the dynamic range to be sufficient for what I do. Seems generally on par for me with regards to other modern cameras I've used. I don't have a good way to share Raw files but I bet you could find some online! Maybe dpreview or the pentax forums! Thanks for watching!

The E-500 was my first DSLR, bought it new somewhere in 2006 or 2007. After my Sony P72 compact was stolen. Don't have the E-500 anymore. Because it couldn't be repaired years later, they replaced it with the newer E-520. The kodak sensor had some magic at lower iso though. Although I don't think it would be a good idea for me to buy an E-500 second hand as I don't use my FT gear anymore and sold most of the low end lenses. Although it was an important milestone in my photography life. Did you sell your E-M10 BTW?

Man that is such an excellent camera to have been your first DSLR! I find it really holds up even to this day, but obviously works best when there is plenty of light to work with. What do you use these days? I still have my E-M10 iii! I actually just shot with it all weekend in Houston! I really love using it for travel!

@@ColtonMatocha Short answers too many camera's 😅. Long answer: I have become quite a camera collector/hoarder. Digital: *OM-System OM-1 II mostly for wildlife, macro, travel and street photography. *Olympus E-M1II converted full spectrum. This is the most artistic camera I own and with Infrared filters it gives me new insights and has some real magic. Together with analog photography it helps me when I am getting tired of photography and when I am uninspired *Panasonic G9II initially for (professional) video work, but it also overlaps the OM-1 in many ways. I use it mostly as my second body and in cases I want to take two camera's with me. *Panasonic GX9 a bit of a fun camera for me. Use it also when I want something smaller and for street photography. It has limited use for me. *Panasonic S5, bought it a year ago to experience full frame. Use it mostly professionally, for portraits, in cases I need les DOF and photographing properties. I also use it with vintage OM lenses and the Leica M mount lenses I own. *Panasonic ZS-200 a compact in case I don't want to carry a second body or just one camera that can do it all. Unfortunately not a bright lens and no flippy screen. *Sony RX100IV compact great to complement the OM-1 for travelling and in cases I don't want to carry a heavy camera and has a bright aperture for low light. . Analog: *Voigtländer Bessa R3A and R2 (fully mechanical). Both range finder camera's. I fell in love with the M in system this was one of the more affordable ways to entry the M system. I wanted to feel the rangefinder camera experience which helped photographers like Henry Cartier Bresson and Robert Kappa telling great stories during their careers. Eventually I hope to buy a recent digital M camera and sell of the R2. *Olympus OM-4 the most comprehensive legacy OM camera I own. Yeah it is a lot. But they all complement each other in one way or an other.

@@eelco6587 sounds like a good collection of cameras! Mainly a fan of Olympus and Panasonic I see! I can understand why. They make solid gear!

For this kind of work you really ought to invest in colour accuracy tools like Xrite Colour Passport 2. Unfortunately it does not seem to work with the CCD sensor of the Pentax 645D :( Having said that, when comparing the 645D natively against other cameras that were successful in generating a Xrite profile, the 645D was not far behind in accuracy :)

Yeah I agree my choice of subject was not a scientific or accurate one, but it was the "Fun" choice 🤣 I'm glad to hear the Pentax is fairly accurate as that's been my experience thus far in using it!

Both the Pentax and the Olympus use CCD sensors. The Sony uses a C-MOS censor. CCD sensors have a reputation for capturing richer, more saturated colors. However, if you use lenses from different brands on the same camera (particularly if they're from the film era), it becomes apparent lenses can have a bigger impact on color than digital sensors. The most important factor here is the anti-reflective coatings used and how much glass is in the lens, for that determines how much of the color spectrum, and in which proportions, make it through the lens to the sensor. The Pentax 120mm Macro comes from the nineties and uses Pentax's SMC coatings, which were state of the art in the seventies and still among the best in the nineties but would not be considered state of the art today. The Olympus 35mm probably has inferior coatings because, like Nikon, Olympus was behind other brands in coating technology until the m43 era. The Sony lens is using state of the art coatings but likely has a ton of glass in it.

Yup I totally agree with that! Thats been my experience with different sensors and lens up to this point. That's also why it was so valuable for me to see specifically what I'm working with & against in visual form!

Thank you for the comparison. Would love to see D700 in the picture as well as JPEGs (assuming you show RAW in LR). By the way, what is your studio setup - thinking it is that 6400+GM

Interesting approach. I’m planning something similar: same lens on different bodies with adapters, under same lighting and at the same white balance. Subject will be a boring color checker card.

Those color checker cards are probably a better subject for these kinds of tests though. Mine was probably less accurate or scientific at the cost of being a little more fun 🤣

@@ColtonMatocha for me it’s to test if Nikon photos are actually yellow. And 2nd thing to test is different tuning on the same sensor among X1D, GFX50S and 645Z.
