you take a nice chunk out of the measuring line when you open the slit for the tail to slide in, that's call breaking the tool you're trying to use.

I'd heard that if you take your shoe size and divide it by 2 and then add 3. It will sum up to your ring finger size.

That would be about right - providing you are young, have had no injury to your finger, have no bone disease (such as arthritis, or undiagnosed conditions)... I'd measure to be sure.
