The only bad thing I can ever say about Ms Ripley is her signature “quarter-flat”. I’ve heard that she’s a beast, and that she’s angelic. But even when somebody pulls the “Alice Ripley impression- run flat after four counts” EVEN SHE TOOK THE MIC and did an impression of herself! She’s a class act thru-and-thru

People in the comments are a bit too mean to this song lol...of course to each their own opinions but in itself the song is really fun and catchy- and despite being a bit stereotypical-ish, it does a great job of showing more of Diana during her manic episodes (which we only really see at the beginning of the musical). Some people say it doesn't fit the mood of the musical, which I kind of agree with but at the same time the entire musical is ridden with humor all throughout! Sure, a whole song that's just entertaining may be pushing it a bit, but yaknow, a bit of high to balance out all the lows of the musical wouldn't have been so bad. You guys are just massively depressed

This song is great to show Diana’s mania (and it was a great reference to “here’s the headline in the papers when you freaked out at the market) but it really doesn’t fit the show at all. Amazing song but definitely not the vibe

DIANA In the olden days of shopping a mother thought of stopping in the village at the tiny general store. But today the modern mommy who needs turnips or salami takes the SUV to somewhere where there's more. She rolls that giant cart right through that giant, giant door. Costco, oh oh oh, costco. Where the lonely and lost go to buy what they lack. Where baked beans and hammers come twelve to a pack. There mayonaise and vats and tampons and hats! There's mac and cheese in packs of threes and teas imported from Belize and extra excitement in store. For women like me who need more, and more, and more! Like stereos and bar-be-ques and wine and giant boxes. And bad cds and dvds and bvds and sockses! And a cherry pie so giant I don't know where to begin I might slice myself a slice or I might dive the hell right in! photos Here's a gallon tub of cottage cheese, the kind with giant curds and the chocolate coated chocolate is just too divine for words. Though the woman with the samples caught me coming back for thirds! [spoken] Well, fuck 'er! Who is she to judge me? Stupid sample lady. [sung] Costco, buh dup buh dup, Costco! Where the tired tempest-tossed go to save their insides. With champagne and sweatpants and radio tires With children to feed I know what I need. (backup: Cheddar cheese!) And one super block of cheddar jack cheese They make super doorstops, I'll take three please. (backup: Oooh) Doritos and Fritos and Cheetos and such... The choice is the choosing-- [spoken] it's a little bit much... [sung] It's salmon and soy beans and salt and sorbet. A wurlitzer organ I can't even play! A washer, a dryer, a plasma tv! And thirteen new britas, the fourteenth is free! And three new computers, we need them no doubt! And printers and WHAT? you say that you're out? So have them sent here from some other store and send them to me in tears on the floor! I'll just be lying here waiting for more, and more, and more, and more, and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and moooore! [spoken] Gimme that. [sung] Aaaaaaand... More! [spoken] Clean up, aisle seven!

Okay, I understand why they cut this song, But I also would have understood keeping it in. And It only now seems so out of place because so many of us never saw it and got used to the tone as it currently stood for so long after this was cut, BUT if it has never been cut, I think it would continue to make perfect sense -- for the manic episode component-- and its vocally impressive, and gives a little HIGH to balance the lows. Damn! I can't believe I am just discovering this! Now my only lingering question is, between which other songs was this formerly placed? AND was anything else cut?!? I know "Mountains" had some lyric changes, as well as another song or two, but were there other full songs CUT??!??

No matter your opinion on the song, you HAVE to admire the vocal stamina Alice Ripley had to have for this number.

I remember at Tom Kitt's American Songbook concert when he was introducing this song, he said, "For anyone who heard this song when Next to Normal was at Second Stage, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

I like this song but not in the musical it would do good as just a song about ECT on its own for some rock star.
@patricko28009 жыл бұрын
I think they should have kept the song but not had the doctor take off his scrubs. I feel like that would have kept the intensity of the song and not turned it into a joke.
