Hi Bruce, when I cut off my drones I can hear air coming out of my tenor drones. What can I do to stop this?

I assume the "Easy Drone" reeds don't need this.

Since this comment was posted a month ago, I'll respond, Ezee drone reeds are the ones I use, and as far as I know, all brands of drone reeds will need to be adjusted so as not to take more air than needed. Do this by adjusting the bridle that goes around the reeds tongue, slide it a small amount up or down until you get them where you like them and they shut off at the same time.

It’s old timers like you that keep it real for Pipers that are upcoming. Too often we see young pipers being misled and even after years of playing still don’t get it right because they hadn’t learned the basics and this is mostly due to their teachers.

Sorry Bruce, you were dead right and I was dead wrong. I rigged up an aluminium stock, drilled a hole in the side for a tight fit for a small lavalier mic. and recorded the mouth blown frequencies. I then played back the recording checking the output frequencies with the Braw Bagpipe tuner and both drones were spot on. i.e. 240 and 120 Hz.

Actually, the 220 Hz and 110 Hz are the vibrations of a column of air within the drones. These air columns are excited to vibrate at these frequencies by the drone reeds. If you mouth blow your reeds out of the drones, these are the frequencies that produce 220 HZ and 110 Hz in the drones. The mouth blown beat frequency out of the drone is approx. 635 Hz and 370 Hz. Due to temperature and moisture, drone reeds can move, that is why drones are adjustable.

Thank you , you have taught me so much. Never taught about drones losing so much air . striking in. ..was a nightmare, it put me off playing the pipes , for years.l was actually hurting myself trying to blow..over the years l have spent hundreds of pounds , learning tunes too difficult for me , with out knowing the basics.. Thank you once again.

Thanks, Bruce, I've always had my pipes set up so I don't need to strike them to start the drones, but I always thought that was wrong since everyone else seems to strike them in. I'm glad to see you not striking them in one of these examples. I'm going to stick with no-strike. I use your reeds, so no reason to change what ain't broke :)

Thanks for all the help Bruce, Ive been watching your videos and learning a lot. I bought my first set of pipes maybe 2-3 months ago and they have a set of Crozier Omega Reeds in the drones. From all reports they are a bastard to set up and I can vouch for that. Im still in the middle of setting them up for efficiency, and when I think I have them right, they start to double tone so I muck around with the strength grub screw. Anyway, thanks again, hope to hear from ya. Cheers Luke from QLD, Australia.

This is all good advice, I had to learn all this by experimentation, now I have another bagpipe and I'm trying cane reeds for the first time, that's a whole new set of lessons to learn, hopefully without so much experimenting.

I lose a lot of air from the chanter, before I even start playing, is that normal? The stock is tightly in place and so is the chanter. The drones and the bag are tight.
@luke46219
@luke46219 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, based on what you wrote this is normal. If you examine the chanter reed by itself there is a small opening between the tips of the two pieces of cane, and until the bag pressure is high enough to make the reed vibrate air will just go through that opening. The drone reeds and chanter reed all will let air pass when the bag pressure is low, but once the reeds start sounding a note the reeds are opening and closing so they are now helping keep the bag pressure up. When you have a chanter reed that sounds at 30 inches of water column vs one that sounds at 40 inches of water column, the one that requires 40 inches is harder to play because it needs more bag pressure before the reed helps you, and also needs more bag pressure to keep it sounding.

If my reeds leak air, are they shot and should be replaced with a fresh set? This is great information about how things should be; but no information is given on what to do to remedy the problem if it's there.

I have the reeds closing and not losing air, but the chanter reed is stronger than the cut off pressure of the drones. Do I have to weaken the chanter reed... or how do I balance them without the drone reeds being less air efficient again?

I was having a hell of a time with my drone reeds,during a recent competition in S.C.,my drone reeds started acting up,actually before this,double toning,not coming in,and cutting out,I tore my pipes apart that weekend after our comp.,and looked for anything wrong with my pipes,found nothing,long story short,I asked around the web for solutions,and four or five pipers recommended Balance Tone Drone Reeds,they were SUPER easy to install,and are awesome reeds,strike in EVERY single time,no double toning,no cutting off,no issues at all,and they sound great in my 14 year old McCallum's,I urge anyone with drone reed issues to get a set of these,you won't be sorry.....

how do you do to strike brrrrrr and then keep a steady drone chanterless sound? for example lets say you want to play steam train to mallaig and that your drones can go brrrrrrrmmmmmmmm and wait a bit for the chanter? i cant do it. my pipes strike in and much before the drones are cleanly stablished my chanter comes on.

What is the average life expectancy of these reeds if played each day for an hour? When is a typical time to renew them to maintain optimum sound/reliability given the strain on the tongues? Thank you.

I went to blow my pipes up and managed to get my tenor drones to cut out with only air (not squeezing the bag) but I had to give a good squeeze to make my bass drone cut out for some reason. The bag did hold the air and eventually they started to sound one by one. Should I shorten the tongue on the bass drone reed with the bridle so it cuts off at the same time as the tenors?
@sonerbihan
@sonerbihan 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, your bas drone reed is to strong, the tongue is a bit to much opened, so , by moving the bridle towards the nose of the reed, viz the closed end, that will reduce the air consuming and will weaken the reed, of such a manner to settle the bass air efficiency ast the same strenght that that of the tenors And now, down to work Friendly Jean Michel
