Blowdown is discharge of water from an evaporative heating or cooling water system such as steam boiler or cooling tower system. Blowdown helps prevent problem-causing impurities in the system water from over-concentrating by replacing a portion of the system water with unconcentrated makeup water. Blowdown can be intentional or unintentional. Bleed is the term usually associated with evaporative cooling systems, while blowdown is the term usually associated with steam boilers. Blowdown is kind a process for purifying the water because "real" water is not pure - it has some stuff ( solids) which will not be dissolved in the process and it will remain as solids which will cause corrosion and other damages in piping which will decrease boiler efficiency. So this harmfull solids must have to be removed out of the boiler.

As water evaporates or turns to steam, it leaves behind the impurities like calcium, etc. You then introduce new fresh water to replace the qater that left and did not return through loss. Eventually, as you can imagine, after many cycles, you will have a large concentration of those.impurities in the boiler water. Blow down is the process of removing some over concentrated water that has all those dissolved solids built up, and replacing it with equal parts make up water (new water that is being introduced to the system for the first time) This helps to reduce scale, corrosion, etc.

Thanks for the question. First, LSI is typically calculated based upon heat exhanger skin temperature (e.g. hottest one) instead of the circulated water temperature. Second, assuming the CoC was chosen based upon achieving an LSI goal (instead of another limiting factor), the trend is the hotter the skin temperature is, the lower the CoC you would target to maintain your LSI goal.

Thank you for sharing this information. I deal with small low pressure electric steam generators and it can be difficult to control the mineral buildup and steam purity in these systems. I'm in east Texas and we have a diversity of water types that make it even more interesting! Thanks again, I definitely learned some things.

Do Scotch marine boiler require water treatment ? If so I don't see no shunt feeder on the boiler.

Thank you for your input, Diaspora. Like most things in life, it all depends upon the circumstances. Biofilms on a metal surface within a piece of cooling equipment can lead to microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) that can shorten the equipment life and cause downtime, for example.
