I also liked the way that the opening paragraph explicitly marks this as a story about a place called "Winter". And then Genly launches into a flashback of a parade in springtime. Rain instead of snow. So right off the bat, we are being taught that things are not always going to match our expectations.

I felt like this story was definitely metaphorical. All the names in Japanese also mean colors (Aka = Red, Ao = Blue, Kuro = Black, Shiro = White). It's like the journey of the soul after trauma, and Sara was more like a catalyst (therapist) for him getting past this trauma. What about that jazz musician that just disappeared and Tsukuru's male friend that vanished after his dream?

I'm a history nerd so this is the kind of thought process I normally go through. As a consequence I don't get the big deal here graphically. Is this an attempt to convey to people that they live on an ever-changing timeline? Revisit HG Well's "The Time Machine" as it travels through time occupying the same space. I'm curious to see what the film does with it.

Hello! If we are presented with a poem, does this mean we don't need to mention purpose, text type, audience, tone, context in our introduction like you didn't do here? Do we jump straight to analysis like you did after your one sentence thesis right in the beginning? I am aware usually in paper 1 we need to outline said terms in regards to the text we are presented with.

I am an aspiring novelist/poet from South Korea. Do you believe that writing can be self-taught? Can I revise my drafts by myself? (I am afraid that self-revision may lead me to self-absorption. On the other hand, I am afraid that other people's comment on my work could lead me to lose my voice or to lose courage in my work.

I just finished it. Having just gotten into sci fi books and having just read the Foundation series and the 3 Body Problem trilogy plus having read 2001 in the past I was caught off guard by the unusually imaginative, gender breaking, highy meditative nature of the book but thats what got me into it. It also showed me the limitations of the imagination of the main writers I knew which wrote an extrapolated version of the reality they knew which is in my opinion mainly a male academic perspective. I am really happy I now have a wider perspective on what is possible to write about in sci fi.

Thanks for this! I'm listening to this book on audible right now and to say I've been a bit confused, more than once, is an understatement lol I'm currently on ch 8, and what I'm really curious about is... the species on winter, they don't seem to be having the reactions I would expect them to have, to a interstellar alien who has landed on their planet! Like, if and when we here on Earth finally have disclosure and contact with an alien race who comes here in friendship with advanced technology and knowledge, to invite and welcome us into a galaxy wide federation of other alien planets?? I mean, lol it changes everything, proof we're not alone in the universe, and that there are other inhabitable planets? Why is this not a life altering event to them? They don't seem all the curious or interested or shocked about this alien creature who traveled in a space ship landing on their planet.... I'm so confused lol do they have prior knowledge or experience with space exploration at all?

If I remember correctly, Hearth is a Gethen term. It refers to the ancestral family home / traditions? Maybe a symbol of family allegiance, obligation, or affiliation?

I looked at the picture of your notes and didn’t have to watch your video. You wrote “be different” as your first note. How can what is written in a poem be different than what is written in a poem, is the only thought that comes to mind. Why are you on here? Be different suggests a philosophy to me, not Shakespeare. The sentiment of angst, is basically what it is. But angst is existential. People can’t be anything other than what they are, however, the sentiment of be different, is an inner angst some people feel, in a way they cannot express, which is why it is philosophy. Let’s look at an example. The butterflies, well they aren’t any different from the bumblebees. There is no calculus of difference. Which is my reflection on math. The only thing that can be really be said to be different, is what one hoped the poem to be, and what it turned out to be. But are you really saying Shakespeare wrote a bad poem? Also suggesting, Shakespeare knew this, and was upset to find he wasn’t really the great Bard future people would call him. Not a sentiment that appeals to me. Hence, I didn’t watch the video. Be different.
