Great masterclass, however, it is quite difficult to pay attention to it when the piano needs a good tuning, and the recording equipment used is terrible.

The whole idea of someone who didn't know the composer thinking they can actually decipher what a composer's "true" intentions were from markings on a page is totally ridiculous to me. I can understand a masterclass for the sake of working out the purely physical and technical aspects of a piece. Like, how to approach certain difficult passages in the most ergonomic, relaxed, pain free way. Or how to conceptualize Scriabin's rhythmic idiosyncracies. But interpretative, expressive aspects are so subjective. No matter how many expressive markings the composer lodges into the score. All you can really do is offer suggestions.

While it's true that no one can definitively know a composer’s exact intentions, trained musicians, especially those who have studied extensively with teachers and in masterclasses, have the tools to make informed decisions. This includes knowledge of the composer’s historical context, their personal style, and even their emotional state during the composition of a work. Markings on the score, whether phrasing, dynamics, or tempo, serve as a guide to the spirit of the piece. Experienced teachers can help bridge the gap between the notes on the page and the broader artistic vision, a skill most self-taught musicians would struggle to develop.

@@tibetatakan Sometimes there are records of people's descriptions of a particular composer or performer's idiosyncracies but it's still a subjective description of one person's impression. And in the case of teacher-student lineages, after so many generations it's like playing telephone. "Trained" means almost nothing at that point. Trained by another person's supposedly informed opinion which was trained by some other person's supposedly informed opinion. I do believe the music speaks for itself if a person has a natural musical sense and an almost mystical connection to the source of all music itself but that's about it. Even with deep roots like that we end up with wildly diverse interpretations by the world's most legendary celebrated pianists.

@@spacevspitch4028 I get what you’re saying about subjectivity and how interpretations can vary, but I think you’re overlooking how much value professional training really brings. Lessons with a skilled teacher aren’t just about passing down opinions but they’re about learning tools and techniques that help you approach music in a deeper, more informed way. A good teacher doesn’t just tell you what to play, they teach you how to think about the music, how to solve technical problems, how to understand style, phrasing, and the historical context behind a piece. Sure, everyone’s interpretation will be different, but that’s kind of the point! Proper training gives you the foundation to create your own interpretation with intention, instead of just relying on gut feeling or luck. Without the knowledge and tools that come from solid training, it’s so easy to miss the layers of detail in a composer’s work or misinterpret their musical language altogether. In the end, lessons aren’t about limiting creativity they’re about giving you the tools to express it fully.

I find the instructor extremely patronising and not very clear. What should be corrected is the movement of the boy's shoulders, and this he does not even bother to notice.
