I understand that, at the beginning it's easier to have a guide but if you do that you'll rely on visual help and won't learn to keep your place. When I used to do that I couldn't memorize anything and used to loose my place when playing with my band. Once I started to play without visual help my ears opened up and started to hear the chords and the bars. An exercise that helped me a lot was: playing the root notes over the bars or bits where the chords are, this helped me to memorize the form and internalize it. After that you can play the 3rd, 5th or 7th, even the 9th, on each chord, that's a great ear training. I also try to memorize the chords asap and don't at the chords at all, I improved very quickly once I stopped looking at visual help. I hope this help.
