I’ve actually been playing around with an idea similar to this for a two-motor planetary transmission, thank you for the proof of concept! I hadn’t thought of using the ratchet to line the teeth up, though I suppose it could still work without, albeit with more friction.

Hi, I am Graeme John Eddington. Following is my KZbin post of my Multi-speed transmission I have called: "Opposing Torque Dynamic Clutch" which is a type of Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT) which I believe is ideal for your current applications. Please log on to my KZbin video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXKmdX5ubrpqhq8
@SSSGearsLtd4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Graeme. Whilst SSS has no current automotive applications, there are historic (now mostly retired) applications in heavy vehicles, including SSS Powerflow (DM shunting locomotive) gearboxes and old London Routemaster buses. The loco examples remain in tact in Sierra Leone National Railway Museum and an operating example at Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (W Yorks, UK). Also, whilst emptying our archives recently (our factory is being expanded), we found that our original chairman, Mr Harold Sinclair, installed an SSS Clutch into the gearbox of his own car (possibly Rover 90). This proved SSS effectiveness to a USA client (gearbox mfr) that a simple "left foot clutch-less" version of the traditional parallel shaft manual gearbox was possible with SSS, which appears to also be your "end goal". We have a letter dated late 1930's, in which Mr Sinclair describes driving "effortlessly" around South London, without using his left foot. It is regrettable that other 1930's global events prevented this application from maturing although we are equally grateful that most SSS applications are more "bespoke" than "mass produced". Regardless, we are always interested in new gear mechanisms and wish you every success with your invention. We also wonder if you could share a layout drawing of your design? Please email it to [email protected] for the attn of SSS Applications Manager. Thanks again, SSS Gears Limited.

The red helical spine- does that extend through and mate with helical splines within the green output shaft? Is that how the disengagement process physically works? That way, when you turn the output shaft faster than the input shaft, the red helical splines “pull” the blue ratchet teeth away from the green clutch ring?

I assume the point of this thing is that it deals with a far greater torque in a given component size than a freewheel does. Does it engage with a bang?
@weisskraut6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right - very high torques and high speeds are possible. It is an extremely robust clutch device - can do much more than normal freewheel devices. No bag effect when engaging - they use a very effective dashpot to cushion the movement. Works really well. Obviously a hand model without oil can't show this.

what does sss stand for?
@SSSGearsLtd9 жыл бұрын
+Jan Savay-Guerraz Jan - Sorry for our late reply. "SSS" stands for "Synchro Self Shifting", because the SSS Clutch function is completely automated and does not require a control system to engage / disengage. Please let me know if you require any further information and thank you for taking time to watch this video of our demonstration model. That's a great product !!! i would like to know how would clutch behaves, while operating in reverse condition ?
@SSSGearsLtd10 жыл бұрын
Vignesh, thank you for your kind comments and many apologies for the late reply. If the output drives backwards (with input stationary), then the SSS Clutch engages. If user doesn't want this to happen then SSS Gears can add user controllable "Lock Out" to prevent it engaging, with a special protection mechanism to stop a smash if the operator presses the wrong button at the wrong time. Not really part of your question, but if the output drives forwards (faster than input) then clutch engages, but SSS Gears can also add user controllable "Lock In" if user wants to deliberately back drive something. If the input drives backwards faster than the output then the SSS Clutch also disengages. In general, this input backwards rotation doesn't occur in most drives for which we supply SSS Clutches, however we have additional design features to protect those that do ! Thanks again and further apologies for the late response. Please email via our website if you have any further questions. Nicholas Bellamy, Application Manager, SSS Gears Ltd.

Sorry, just saw that we haven't answered yr question! SSS Gears design, assemble, test, develop SSS Clutches in house. The hand model was designed by us to illustrate engage / disengage principles to customers (Siemens, Alstom, GE, MHI, Ansaldo etc. etc.) and end users (Navies, powergen companies etc.). The model is designed in house + outsource 3D printed. Please let me know if we can help further and again, apologies for the delay. Nicholas Bellamy Applications Manager SSS Gears Ltd.

Also, synchromesh requires the gears to be pushed towards mesh to function (either manually or with a controlled actuator type system), whereas the SSS Clutch is fully automatic and engages whenever input speed > output speed, then disengages input speed < output speed. Thanks again for your excellent question. Kindest Regards, Nicholas Bellamy Applications Manager SSS Gears Ltd.

Excellent question. The idea of synchronised connect / disconnect drive is similar to that of synchromesh, however synchromesh friction is not well suited for high power / high inertia jobs. See also Y100 powerplant page on Hazegray which describes SSS Clutches replacing friction / dog clutches (similar to synchromesh) which were originally installed in the British, US and Canadian Navy gas turbine propulsion drives.

@JoaoMario24 Thank you ! SSS Clutches feature in heavy industrial power gen, marine propulsion and petrochemical drives. It is suited to applications where automatic engagement between driver and driven machines is required as opposed to manual / lever controlled engagement. Although designed initially (1950) for automatic gearboxes, the automotive references are limited to buses and not cars..... but the original Chairman of SSS Gears had one fitted to the auto gearbox of his own Jaguar !

Is this used in road-legal automobiles? I don't see how would the gearbox connect to the clutch. And by the way, it is the simplest YET best piece of mechanical engineering ive seen in a while.
