this is helpful explanation of BI-RADS and what to look for and how to differentiate one type of mass from another. I do take issue not telling them the true BI-RADS finding because it infantilizes them. Your intent not to worry them may be kind, but It's their body and they have a right to know and to decide whether to worry or not. I can tell you this - they will not worry if you do a good job on patient education and explain the BI-RADS findings as you have done here. In fact, a comment from a patient below indicates how helpful this is. please do not assume patients will not understand. I spent 10 years in medical education working with physicians on patient communication and teaching skills in clinical settings of all kinds including OB/GYN, surgery, and the ED. I have seen doctors do an amazing job explaining imaging in plain terms so patients understand and do not needlessly worry. It really is not up to you to withhold information from a patient. I think that's an ethical issue.

Found a lump a week ago, on a Saturday. Went to the doctor Monday, she found 2. Getting a diagnostic mammogram this Thursday. This is so informative to me, thank you! The one I noticed is about the size of a skittle or a M&M. The additional one she found was very tender and seemed to be an inflamed lymph node. I really hope I get a radiologist as educated as you. And books don’t teach you everything, experience speaks volumes! Thank you!

Annoying speaker. Unclear rambling makes her sound drunk. It's a pity since her information is fantastic.

What about the fact that cysts, while they may be non-cancerous, cause real pain on the surrounding structures of the neck. Even the tiny mm cysts cause pain. I’ve talked to so many people with 3-6mm cysts and my cyst is 3mm and it feels awful in the area the cyst is. I have no other problems. No thyroiditis, I have a healthy thyroid function, and all is fine. Except for this damn cyst. I wish the medical community could do something.

Thank you for your comment. Please see the response below from Dr. Nielsen: For mammography: - ACR BI-RADS Atlas (Edition 5, 2013) - Must read - Clinical Breast Imaging: The Essentials by Gilda Cardenosa (2014) - Breast Imaging by Daniel B. Kopans (Third Edition, 2006) (textbook) For breast MRI: - Breast MRI: Diagnosis and Intervention, by Morris and Lieberman Bonus book: The Art and Science of Early Detection with Mammography: Perception, Interpretation and Histopathologic Correlation (2004), by Laszlo Tabar. This book inspired me to go into mammography, outlining a brilliant & artistic approach to perception of early tumors.
