I used another way. a+b = 20, so a^2+2ab+b^2=400, but ab=44 so a^2+b^2=400-88=312. (a-b)^2=a^2-2ab+b^2, so (a-b)^2=312-88=224. a-b=+-sqrt(224)=+-4sq(14). Since a+b=20. 2a+b-b=20+-4sqrt(14). a=10+-2sqrt(14) and b=20-a for each case.

y = x - 65. sqrt(y) = 13 - sqrt(x). Squaring and using the above equation x - 65 = y = 169 - 26sqrt(x) + x. Simplifying 26sqrt(x) = 234, sqrt(x) = 9. Squaring, x = 81. So, y = 81 - 65 = 16. Checking, the answer is correct. Thus, x + y = 97.

why 5^x = 2 = 1?

You’ve lost roots in case a=b. It’s (1+-sqrt(293))/2
