Here's my personal story with this game: I had a friend who was a chronic critic about everything and said that this game was utter garbage and that he was gonna do a playthrough to show me how laughable it was, he never ended up doing a playthrough and I became curious enough to buy it for 10 bucks on steam at the time...I ended up playing through the previous version from I.V and streaming the whole thing to him and it put an absolute smile on my face, its such an interesting game and you wont see many things like it...everything that my friend expected me to criticize I was aware of such as the writing, the bugs/glitches, the parts of the game that weren't connected well or intentionally confusing...but frankly I didn't care, it was a very very fun experience for me and one of the only games I've played that made me think deeply about it in my sleep while also laughing my ass off the whole time and anticipating the next part of the story...I loved the previous version and am currently playing through I.V and it really makes it a directors cut type of feel. I wouldn't say the update "fixed" things like many people claim, made it better for sure, but that whole "this game is some broken garbage made by pretentious people with a closed minded perspective on writing and crappy game design" its all up to how you perceive something. Often times people have a hivemind opinion because they cannot think or ever form an opinion on their own, so I can understand how if one person looks at all the backlash from this game and saw the mixed reviews at the time, they would just assume a certain way and call it a day. This is one of those lessons why reviews don't really matter, you can legit play a game that is rated as "mostly negative" on steam or a game that is considered "the lowest point" of the series and still have a lotta fun. People need to learn to never let another individual or group of people prevent you from having fun and genuinely enjoying something through tuning out negativity. I've never seen a game evolve and reform from being updated 3 times (It doesn't just get additions or patch notes, it metamorphizes into something new like a pokemon) I've never seen a friend get soo pissed off at me for enjoying something he expected me to to immediately dismiss along with him and the entire community that was aware of this game! "why are you so charitable with this game" "you're insane to even tolerate this" I'd just say to him, "Man, you've got a lot in common with Alex, look at the loading screen tip: 'You don't have to be critical all the time' XDD

It really is difficult to discuss YIIK, because I genuinely don't know if it was the game itself that failed audiences or the audience that failed the game. Without a doubt the gameplay was a huge miss that took Paper Mario's quick and snappy Action RPG system and dragged it out to be monotonous and frustrating, but the story is honestly YIIKs greatest highlight and it kills me to see so many people that "just don't get it". People need to understand that YIIK is not suppose to be taken literally for he most part, it's story is more metaphorical. You're also NOT suppose to like Alex nor believe anything he says at face value. Alex is an unreliable narrator, and story is filtered to make him the "Hero" and center of the universe because that's exactly what Alex wants. Perhaps I.V made that easier to grasp, since it makes no small effort to depict Alex as a literal Demon.

So what I'm getting is that the correct ending is let Alex's world die, its his fault, let it burn
@pantslesswrockАй бұрын
That was the original ending, yes. It was changed to be less pessimistic after the developers’ mom died, and they didn’t want to keep working on so downer of an ending.

Games I usually hate I hate because I want the game to fail, I don’t want anyone to play it. But YIIK, YIIK I want to be good, I want YIIK to improve, I want to criticize not from a place of malice, but because it was so close to being great, it was so close to being lovable. YIIK could have been amazing and YIIK had been great… and it seems like hopefully in the future it will be. YIIK is bad. But YIIK could be amazing, and I genuinely hope it becomes that. The devs are so passionate, and they deserve to be recognized, criticized (fairly) and have an opportunity to improve! I want these devs to make more!

Scene kids existed throughout the 90s (and the 70s and 80s but different vibe/style). Absolutely viable that a late nineties scene kid would look like him. Otherwise awesome breakdown of this truly odd game. Seriously. Amazing work. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. 🍻

But Rory is specifically modeled after a 2000’s-style, Iraq War protesting scene kid. Because the game world outside of Alex’s head is set in the 2010s.
@remy3333 ай бұрын
@ that’s helpful added context. Being that the war officially ended in 2011, that makes much more sense. Sounded like he meant scene kids didn’t exist prior to then.

idk man theres just something about the gameplay I really can't get behind. Idk why, I might be a dumdum, but its just so complicated. Theres way way too many things to keep track of. I've died so many times because I didn't read exactly what the status effect from an enemy did, or because I forgot one of my items existed. The thing that makes the game great for me, is the theme and vibe. It has absolutely hit the nail on the head there. But I just can't understand the gameplay. If anybody can help me wrap my head around the gameplay, it'd be much appreciated.

Coming in 2 years late, why is everyone saying Alex should've said x to redeem himself or the game should've done y to make Alex feel bad That's not the point of the game, the point of it is to show off how a shitty Gary Stew who thinks he's a Gary Stew lives out his life as a Gary Stew without knowing it until near the end Alex wasn't made to feel bad, he was made to feel like he should do whatever he wants and have everyone accept his actions as just actions without any consequences I get that you WANT him to be a better person but that's only what YOU want, and that's not why the game was made, Alex is a piece of shit, and forever will be because that's his whole character and who he's meant to be All that being said, I'm still not sure why the creator said that we should just accept Alex as he is, people want to see good characters exist in a world with bad ones so we can see those interactions and why they interact in the first place, to be upset that your main hero isn't actually a hero but is chaotic good at best and chaotic neutral at worst with no change despite literally everyone around him WANTING said change is just the creator writing himself into corners that can only be made as paths by literally wiping everyone's memories and emotions towards said events and just not bringing them up once they happen so Alex can keep being his intended character

Kudos to you for understanding the game better than 99% of the internet. Some context you might find helpful: in the original ending, Alex falls for the Essentia’s lies and instead of unplugging his body from her, the final boss is the Essentia helping Alex literally kill himself. Upon success, the eradication of Alex’s universe is complete, and the game ends with him going to wander the Soul Space, untethered (which was previously explicitly told to us during the sewer section to be a thinly veiled metaphor for Death). The game was about a piece of crap who had to change, and tragically didn’t, destroying his multiverse and cutting off all his possible alternate selves. Classic cynical post-modernism - nothing especially new for the lens, but a solid foundation for an enthusiastic amateur work in the movement. And then the mother of the main dev team died. And these young people found their relationship with death had suddenly altered so much they just couldn’t keep working on so cynical and depressing a game. But the game was too big and too finished and too much of a rat’s nest of plots for the core to be changed dramatically without delaying launch and thus profits even longer than the death had already caused. So they hastily scraped together a new, hopeful ending they could bear to work on and release, where Alex realizes the Essentia lies and unplugs his physical self from her, and threw in the Earthbound reference quiz at the beginning so it doesn’t come ENTIRELY out of left field. Ultimately, these decisions absolutely contribute in a major way to YiiK’s messiness, but even if the game’s story ultimately collapses on itself, I find that the story behind why that happened is very compelling and human.

@@pantslesswrock The team were completely trapped in what they could make based off of what they already had, I understand that, I just hope there's some sort of third game that's able to bring their true visions out, maybe connected to the previous games, maybe not but these devs COULD have a really interesting story to tell, they just had unfortunate events change what they could do in this instance and the project suffered because of it I do wish they could've been understanding and transparent behind the scenes and understood where everyone was coming from to criticize their game in such a way because that's how you get people coming back to support your personal projects, as a pretty disconnected example, the Cat Quest series of games couldn't appeal to such a wide audience if everyone behind the team kept talking about how they hate gamers and that they never wanted anyone to like the characters they put out for a clearly childlike audience, their games wouldn't be as liked and it's possible Cat Quest 1 would've been the only game they made instead of a series of (at least, because the 4th one is confirmed to come out) 4 games where the team inserts themselves to speak to the players and directly give praise to everyone who made the franchise as popular as it is, which is really sweet, as the rest of the games are, each improving with the next installment in the series and all able to appeal to this 20 year old... even if 1 and 2's story didn't really excite me and 3 is just One Piece themed, I'm confident that the 4th game will give me even more pure joy playing it than I did 3, but that's because of how much personality is put into each game, Alex's story is told in such a trashy way, I feel like if they don't make another game, they're gonna HAVE to fix Alex's story somehow
@pantslesswrock3 ай бұрын
@@cottoncandyenthusiast8371 They absolutely didn’t respond in the best way, but I would hope with some distance we can appreciate that they were already going through trauma before having to endure the trauma of the internet ripping to shreds the game you were spending all your time on while your mom died of cancer. Furthermore, they never said they hated gamers or anything like that. The infamous “My mistake was thinking games were art” quote was a response to a specific tweet saying that games should be artless products that only get you high.

Honestly i think the easiest way to fix yiik is to remove anything regarding multiverses and alex as the main protagonist. Make it about a gang of people searching for paranormal stuff. Have Alex be this aggressive atheist type who thinks all religion and paranormal stuff is mumbo jumbo, even outright rejecting it when it shows up in his face, but as the game goes on have him come to accept it as true and have him and his gang come together to solve the mysteries. Maybe when rorys part comes up have it be that the lemonade llama is actually a demon that feeds off of peoples grief, and have that demon take the form of rorys sister, causing him to not be able to attack it out of pure anguish.
@JimMilton-ej6zi5 ай бұрын
Alex is a lot like his creator, when people criticized the creator he got angry and defensive, he refused to accept any criticism and when people told him that it wasn't good storytelling he was like "ugh gamers just don't understand real art". I think yiik could've been good, if not for the creator self sabotaging it
