Gary Hoey is still playing. Severral years ago I worked a job where we managed websites and his wifev would call in occasionally to get something done, I got to talk to her a few times - never got to speak with Gary - and occasionally we'd talk about his music

Picked up a 700VP from a thrift store for $80 just a few days ago! I had no prior knowledge of maintaining or even playing a guitar, but I was able to replace the tuning pegs and the missing saddles and it plays very well! Now I just need to learn how to play it properly

People talk about the flood of guitars but i think miss the fact CNC machines are making better basic guitars cheaper, thus a new high level Squier can hold its own against a few year old Fender for playability.

I love the ice cream chord progressions. Im amazed looking at the spiderweb of connections like ties from spanish guitar to surf to spaghetti westerns to james bond and Batman! Look at blues influence in modern metal. Im currently trying to learn the neck better with some jazz chords but even tracing back gypsy jazz gets you to spanish guitar. Blues to rockabilly to rock, its all interconnected. Many kids took those cowboy chords from gene audry and started experimenting.

Excellent list, fellas! One guy I thought never got the recognition he deserved (despite playing with some of the biggest names in popular music) would be Daryl Stuermer. If you can go toe-to-toe with Holdsworth (as he did on Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean), you're something special. But he's also such a great writer, as well. Tommy Bolin would be another. Shawn Lane, as well. And Ralph Towner. The list goes on and on! Glad to see Steve Morse on the list. My favorite. Love his playing and, more importantly, his writing. As a composer, he never repeats himself, but you always know its him.
