Do you know-or does your guest know-if Texas government retirees will have their Social Security benefits reduced due to WEP-GPO? FYI, there’s legislation in front of the US Senate to repeal it

What are your thoughts about index annuities that pay guaranteed incomes? Like a pension but in annuity form? I've seen a few channels post about "hybrid annuities" that work like a pension. I know annuities have fee issues. Curious to get your thoughts on this financial product.
@teachermoneyshow
@teachermoneyshow Ай бұрын
The only time and annuity makes sense is if you need need guaranteed income because you have a very low risk tolerance and you are willing to pay for that benefit. When you already have an annuity as a teacher (i.e. your pension) it is really unnecessary to have any other annuity. As Karl Fisch said, if you want more of an annuity consider buying years of service from your pension provider. This is probably going to be cheaper than buying a separate annuity and will likely have better returns (naturally compare your options before making a purchase). Personally, I wouldn't get an additional annuity though, I'd focus on higher return investments like a total market index fund. I hope that helps. If you want to talk through any other questions, consider guesting on the show! www.teachermoneyshow.com/guest or send me an email at [email protected] and I'll answer it on the show.

Greetings from Taipei, Taiwan! As a part-time professor, I am on a 10-month pay system with no pay during the summer. Full-time profs get a reduced summer paycheck. I didn't realize it at the time, but since I was banking a huge percentage of my paychecks over the years, I was implementing Stephanie's advice before I heard it today. I'll have an expensive dentist appointment tomorrow, and the savings will come in handy.

Greetings from an American expatriate language teacher (and formerly the only graduate student member of the Vietnamese Students Association at The University of Texas at Austin!)! I'm angry at Ray--why? Because a million years ago, Ray wasn't at Seaside High School to teach me financial literacy! I want Ray to invent a time machine, go back to SHS, and teach me financial literacy for high school credit before I ran off to college and the white-collar world. I also need Ray to invent the Internet and laptop computers and then create KZbin and get on your show.

Greetings from an American expatriate language teacher (and Show 6 guest!) in Taipei, Taiwan. I just did a Google search for “online tutoring platforms” and found several. Great show! I’m getting close to retirement and I wasn’t always good at maximizing my income. I’m doing better at it now, though, by hosting English Corner conversation sessions at one of my universities (free-and untaxed-lunch, too!) and doing freelance and contract teaching.

Paying for things with cash really DOES change your spending! It's much harder to justify those little purchases when you're watching your money leave your hand.

Thank you for showing teachers and others a real-life example of how a young family can set itself up for financial security and success by being "very intentional" about planning for retirement even while young. This inspires hope.

The flip side is that at least you can get something for whatever you pay for retirement and health insurance. Teacher pay is still often pretty low, though! Maybe one way to attack this issue is to use your job for predictable income and benefits while you’re freelancing for real money. Don’t let The Man know, though! 😊 As a Texas teacher in the 1980s, I was a poorfessor earning the princely amount of $18,500 a year.

I had a similar experience with a university where I taught here in Taipei, Taiwan! I had chest pains and reported to the Emergency Room and I was sort of happy that a heart attack would keep me away from the campus and more importantly, from my evil StupidVisor*! Fortunately, the chest pains were a big NothingBurger. However, the same StupidVisor, on another occasion when I had a legitimate medical emergency, tracked me down to my hospital room and told me "Don't let this happen again!" I'm glad that I don't work for that evil StupidVisor anymore.

I misspoke! The Mexican university whose branch in San Antonio, Texas USA I attended is the UNAM (Spanish initials for "National Autonomous University of Mexico"). Also: I mentioned a KZbinr called StephenWorldwide who's not the same Steven/Stephen mentioned in the show notes. The one I mentioned has some great videos on how he earned $5000 USD/month teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in South Korea.

Excellent! Greetings from an American expatriate in Taipei, Taiwan. A long time ago, I would work crazy unpaid hours for ingrate StupidVisors to write perfect lesson plans, grade student work, etc. It was truly awful for my health. I now realize that my health and overall wellbeing need to be at the front of the line--health is truly wealth! I'm writing this in Starbucks after an early morning Qigong* class in a beautiful park, followed by weightlifting and a bike ride. It's a matter of mindset: I now remind myself that my dear Vietnamese online graduate students--and others--are counting on me, so I need to maintain excellent health and fitness so as to be available for them. *Qigong--Chinese exercise for health--very low impact, yet it covers many aspects of fitness. I highly recommend Brother Insight; his KZbin channel on Qigong rocks!
