I don’t understand why people keep commenting that life on the road is not as funny as the office. It isn’t to be fair but then I don’t think it was meant to be. I personally preferred the office as it had many more characters that interacted on a more personal level with much more humour in the script . This film whilst funny in parts brought out the pathos in the character and I found it very touching and emotional. I thoroughly enjoyed it , we don’t have to have a laugh a minute to appreciate good work. ,

"The Office" is fantastic. "Life On The Road" was rather depressing and never really funny. The huge contrast between these two uses of the "David Brent" character would make a good basis for an analysis of what made "The Office" so good. It seems to me one aspect of "Life On The Road" is that Gervais may have flirted with the idea that the audience will like the songs to some extent. Make no mistake, they are bad, but they are not as cringey as they would have needed to be to create real humour. The "Life On The Road" David Brent often comes across as too real, too human, as opposed to being this hilarious caricature of a person that needs attention at all cost like the "The Office" David Brent. The latter is not an evil monster so we can still connect to him on a human level, but he is so over the top and unintentionally comical that he becomes an irresistible source of laughter. In contrast, the "Life On The Road" David Brent evokes pity and sadness more than anything else. N.B., I agree: The happy ending was completely unearned. What a difference, again, to the emotional ending to "The Office" where Dawn choosing Tim is one of the best pay outs ever.

I think it's somewhat melodramatic to assert that this film somehow destroys The Office, or the legacy of the character and that it's 'unforgivable' etc.. But I do agree with his review in general. The film is depressing, low on laughs, incoherent in its character developments and seems to lack any point or controlling idea. Ricky has also gotten hung up on one of Brent's vocal affectations that would crop up only a few times per season in The Office - but has now become an annoying sort of 'tick' which I wouldn't be surprised if it's reappearances numbers into double figures by the end of this film. An absolute misfire to such a degree that one wonders what the reasoning was behind it. RG certainly doesn't need the money so I wonder if there was some kind of political game going on... maybe RG wanted some kind of deal with Amazon Prime and they agreed only if he revisited The Office...etc. All that said - it hasn't ruined the original for me in any way.
@DaveCleeve8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment! You may be right about the melodramatic statements, but I've also found that before this film came out I would revisit the original series every couple of years, and I haven't watched it once since this film. Obviously the quality of the series itself isn't impacted when experienced in a vacuum, but when the knowledge that Brent's story doesn't end in the series and does somewhat end in this film, the connection exists and it's hard to ignore. I feel similarly about the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, and the impact it has on the brilliant first half of the series knowing where everything ends up.

@@DaveCleeve Yep totally understand where you're coming from. I think for me on this subject, time is quite relevant. When so much time exists between releases, it sort of separates them into their own atmospheres if you like. It's like how people love the Indiana Jones Trilogy and don't minding referring to it as such, even when they know that there are actually 2 other films in the cannon altogether. It's almost like... the more you dislike a film maker for 'gilding the lily' so to speak, the more you love their original efforts just to enforce that distinction between something brilliant, and something crap. I personally DO believe that Brent's story ends at the Christmas Party. If LOTR wasn't such a shameless cash-grab, I would view it as Brent's next chapter because it would have come from a place of integrity and humility just like The Office did. But Success changes people to such a degree that it's almost like they're completely different people, so why bother believing that such a mutilated corpse as LOTR even came from the same mind? I guess George Lucas is the ultimate expression of this - or musically, Michael Jackson. I really appreciate the reply dude - keep up the good work!!

@@thereisahellbelievemeIveseenit it wasn’t an official release by the band, but it was approved personally by Oli as he saw and provided feedback on some rough cuts. Oli posted it on his Twitter, but sadly it never made it to their official KZbin channel mostly due to the fact that the Sempiternal release was imminent and I don’t think they wanted to be promoting old material or showcasing Jona on guitar since he was no longer part of the band. I don’t have any more material I’m afraid, other than the edit of the full performance that this video was captured from.
