A factual error in the first minute. He didn't land in Red Square. He landed on the nearby Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge.

Here's another one. The Cessna 172 shown at 1:24 is a Cessna Reims 172N model with a Danish registration. Rust flew a German registered Reims Cessna 172P. The Reims models were being manufactured by Reims Aviation in Reims, France.

I like that Rust pointed out the absurdity of the circumstances back then. I was the same age and moved from Denmark to Hamburg at the same time. When I had experienced the divided Berlin a few times, I had friends from Denmark visiting. We stood by the Reichstag and looked at the nearby wall. One of my friends just burst out: "How ridiculous. Why don't they just remove it?". A wall built by the East to "protect them from the West" even though all it did was keeping people from the East from fleeing to the West. The wall fell the year after.

Yes, somebody has played with that button: at the time when this documentary was made there was a feeling of "cold war is long over now". And this year (2022) we find that this chapter isn't over at all......

That's not noise, that's damage to the film. And there is quite a bit of film from the 80s with such prevalent damage throughout most or all of the film.

Matthias Rust is a piece of shit. Just a reminder that this guy tried to kill a woman with a knife because she didn't want to kiss him. He didn't have to serve his full sentence and didn't want to pay any damages to her. Before posting this comment, KZbin reminded me that thus may be inappropriate. This is hands down the strangest Ferry interview I have ever seen. Absolutely delightful - thank you. I wish more interviewers engaged their subjects in this way. It was very disarming and oddly intimate.

1:00 That is not tarmac. You can tell because it's green and furry looking. That stuff is called grass. Tarmac is black or light gray depending on how it's mixed or how old it it. It is flat, hard, and waterproof. I think the word you are looking for is "ramp" witch is where you park airplanes at an airport.
