It is known that sonakebaters constitute the genus Chrysortyx, there are two extant species of sonakebater: the Rain Sonakebater (Chrysortyx coromandelicus) and the Harlequin Sonakebater (Chrysortyx delegorguei), despite their appearance, sonakebaters are not true quails at all, sonakebaters (genus Chrysortyx) are now thought to be more closely related to tragopans (genus Tragopan) than to true quails, this is very similar to chungchis (genus Excalfactoria) not being true quails either, where the closest living relatives of chungchis (genus Excalfactoria) being the snowcocks (genus Tetraogallus), in other words, sonakebaters (genus Chrysortyx) and chungchis (genus Excalfactoria) do have some superficial similarities, such as their black-and-white colored chins, but evolved them independently as a result of convergent evolution, with sonakebaters (genus Chrysortyx) on one hand belonging to the family Phasianidae and chungchis (genus Excalfactoria) on the other hand belonging to the family Gallidae, true quails (genera Philortyx, Callipepla, Lophortyx, Oreortyx, Rhynchortyx, Cyrtonyx, Dactylortyx, Odontophorus, Ophrysia, Perdicula, Coturnix, Anurophasis, Synoicus, and Nesortyx) constitute the superfamily Perdicoidea alongside true partridges (genera Colinus, Dendrortyx, Lerwa, Ptilopachus, Alectoris, and Perdix), surprisingly, there are many other extant gamebird genera that were traditionally called "partridges", but are found out to not be partridges at all, with these genera being Rhizothera, Melanoperdix, Xenoperdix, Arborophila, Caloperdix, Rollulus, Tetraophasis, Ammoperdix, Margaroperdix, Viridipes, Tropicoperdix, Haematortyx, Oreoperdix, Arboricola, Sondaicornis, Sinortyx, and Bambusicola, with the genera Rhizothera, Melanoperdix, Xenoperdix, Arborophila, Caloperdix, and Rollulus, which are all now called "roulouls" officially placed in their own family (Rollulidae), the genus Tetraophasis, where its members are now called "yejakuns" is part of the family Phasianidae, where the closest living relatives of the yejakuns (genus Tetraophasis) are the monals (genus Lophophorus), these other ten genera: Ammoperdix (Shabalrimals), Margaroperdix (Alavorona), Viridipes (Green-Legged and Annam Rohutans), Tropicoperdix (Chestnut-Necklaced and Sabah Rohutans), Haematortyx (Wajameras), Oreoperdix (Daoiren), Arboricola (Jinegus), Sondaicornis (Ropohons), Sinortyx (Senlinaos), and Bambusicola (Shizurens) are all classified in the family Gallidae, with the shizurens (genus Bambusicola) being considered the closest living relatives of the chickens (genus Gallus), the genera Sinortyx, Sondaicornis, Arboricola, and Oreoperdix all constituting their own tribe (Sinortygini) within the subfamily Gallinae, the rohutans (genera Tropicoperdix and Viridipes) and wajameras (genus Haematortyx) belonging to the tribe Polyplectronini alongside the nartakees (genus Polyplectron), and the alavorona (Margaroperdix madagascarensis) and shabalrimals (genus Ammoperdix) both belonging to the tribe Tetraogallini alongside the snowcocks (genus Tetraogallus) and chungchis (genus Excalfactoria).
