This was in the south so- Still segregated unfortunately. They were always the majority of bands though, because the music is Motown/ R&B. Later on (late 70’s and much more in the 80’s) there was a mix of black and white dancers. But without black musicians in the 50’s 60’s & 70’s there would have been no Shag.

These are exactly the same steps I learned when I was exhibition dancing, the disco dances, and the jitterbug, only slower. I used to dance in a group in Toronto and we danced, cha cha, foxtrot, tango and the same steps we used as they are using for many dances. It isn't just for this dance.

Swing dances are similar as they are all danced to 4/4 time. Shag is a bit slower, like "andante".

Perhaps you don't understand the dance - it's not the jitterbug and there isn't a lot of hip swinging in shag ... and he is also trying to show you the purest movement uncluttered with flourish. Look at them today: bit.ly/1inZxTh .. mind blowingly good ...

LOL they are Much improved since this beta was made and went on to win numerous shag and open swing competitions. Check out some of their videos from the 2000s. There's one from 2013 where he does the splits while pushing 70!

Well, OK then. Burroughs and Chapin made damn sure that the old Myrtle Beach died. Destroyed the pavilion and amusement park. Why? To make room for the Hard Rock park that did not last a season.
