as a bassoonist, i’ll never understand why composers choose to do so little with the instrument. it infuriates me to play stuff like this with trash parts.

As a single-reedist, I can’t relate 😅 haha

Phenomenal recording. I don’t understand why everyone slams on the breaks at 271. I could have sworn there was a note in the front of the score specifically calling this moment to the attention to the conductor.
@almondmattress11 күн бұрын
I am also a fan of this recording, which is why I chose to use it. In the conductor's notes, it does say that "there should be absolutely no change in tempo at measure 271" :)

I would have never guessed this wasn't Mozart if the radio host didn't mention Carl after the piece finished. Brilliant!

the texture at 9:35 is amazing. Absolutely love it. As a bass clarinet player who's playing this song for our spring concert, I approve

Definitely a fun section. Love the call-and-response which fall into the bass clarinet solo!

This has long been one of my very favorite Ives works. I actually wrote a paper on this curio when taking Larry Starr's Ives class @ the U. of Washington waaaaay back in 1981. I always intended to program it on one of my concerts over the years but never got around to it this lifetime, dammit!

That’s amazing! I love this piece as well. Unfortunately it seems to be quite overlooked and rarely performed…
@bobpriest17202 ай бұрын
@@almondmattress Right you are, I've never heard it live! As for putting this gem on stage, it would take quite a bit of rehearsal and probably should be played at least twice on a given program, don't you think?

Great memories of this recording when it first came out back in the 60s. My first exposure to the American oboe school of playing. An aunt, not much older than me, described the second movement as a suitable backing music for a nature programme where a deer was giving birth. She could not understand why I liked this work so much
@almondmattress4 ай бұрын
Happy to hear you enjoyed it. I really like this work as well. I could definitely see this as part of a nature programme... Would be quite exciting with the first and third movements.
