My father was a great wood carver, from carving bust's to lengths of chains to wooden balls in cages, I ask him what was the most important carving tool in his carving box, he said, sand paper,

As you may or may not be aware, wearing loose articles of clothing are not ideal for working with power tools/rotating equipment. Other than this clear safety faux pas, nice job!

I enjoyed watching your video as I’m planning to make some olive wood salt cellars as Christmas gifts. I have a 3” x 12” olive wood blank that I plan to cut into 4 salt cellars and carve by hand similar to the way you did yours. I noticed your wood was wax covered green wood. My question is have you had problems with your salt cellars warping or cracking once they start drying out? Thank you!

Great recovery from being startled! You kept control of the tool, didn’t ruin your project, and didn’t swear. 10 out of 10!

I think it was just some strange artifact of the video. I have used various barrel hinges in different projects and they don’t really make any sound whatsoever.

Till some woodworker doesn't create software designed to do so and he will build that on AI... He will just train it accordingly. Sooner or later unfortunately. In 10-15 years for 100%.

Interesting video I would strongly suggest when working with a table saw the sleeves on the top should be pulled up and the head covering needs to be worn so it does not trail and present a risk snagging in the blade or machinery

It’s not riding along the fence until the miter gauge was no longer being used. There’s a small gap there that’s hard to see at the beginning of the 0:58

Can it stay in a 30 degree angle for example? Is it mechanically able to hold a certain opening angle ?
@dewrus2153
@dewrus2153 2 ай бұрын
Probably. Depends on the weight of the lid. I used two small barrels on a ring box and it holds the lid at any angle. I would think it would be the same for a box like in this video. However if the lid was larger or heavier, it might not hold at partial open position…just full open.

Interesting you went with a text to text version of AI. I'm more of a visual person so I prefer using image prompts with something like Stable Diffusion. It's like creating your own incredible sketchbook of ideas and mock-ups from works that inspire you. ...Great concept for the video - Don't underestimate the significance of this moment - you really have documented a moment in history here

This is a beautiful gift idea! I'm new to woodworking but I think I can do this with the basic tools I have. Do you think I can carve out the hole with just a dremel and burr attatchments instead of the die grinder? Also what are the dimensions of the block you started out with? Thank you?

No idea why .... but this particular style of barrel hinge ... is NOT the most "hidden" hinge available. No one has published a vid on it ... but there is another style, that is NOT so busy, or is more hidden .... and that is the straight TRUE "barrel" hinge that is nothing but a simple cylindrical, hinged bit of brass rod, with a steel pin thru it .... !! I've been using them for a couple of years now in the small boxes I make...... no issues. The things in this video are 1) too big, and 2) stick out like a sore thumb--- NOT as "hidden" as these experts would have you believe. They require bores twice the size of the straight rod type hinge and are ugly as sin.
@dewrus2153
@dewrus2153 2 ай бұрын
These types are called hidden because when the box is closed, you can’t see them (in other words…hidden). However I totally agree with you that the simpler barrel hinges you mentioned look better with the lid open. And there are many videos using the simpler ones…just have to search for them.

I’ve actually started automating the actual compartment portion by cutting a bunch on the CNC. I sell the single tiered ones for $110 and the double-tiered for $135. It’s the only way to get a decent ROI. They sell out every time.
