Nice! Amazing how the final details really firmed it up and and finished it off- how to experience your new just would’ve needed. I tend to paint large so I have not come across that little detail of actually darkening the corners on a light subject to make everything pop. it is especially effective in the reduced size. Thanks for the tip! Until next time… SARA PS- glad to see you really like that velvet touch, I use them also and especially like the long rounds

Thanks Sara. I always admire people who work big, I'm too much of a coward to even try.... It's true, it's the contract that makes an illustration work or fail. And yes, the Velvet touch is one of the very best of the synthetics, isn't it!

Hey! I love your paintings and videos. I'm a tattoo artist, specialised in flowers but also do botanical aquarel and color pencils. ❤ hope to be able to get further on that in our dutch botanical artist group, but as a young (35 but next to most in that group I am young, and being covered in tattoos doesn't help) as I am I find it difficult to be accepted

Ah. Isn't it odd how certain types of people tend to do certain types of art? Botanical illustration, at least for pleasure, seems to be done by ladies of a certain age. Not always, but they certainly make up the majority of the people taking my workshops. I'm a member of certain botany and illustration groups, and even though I'm 53 I'm often the youngest there by some margin. So I'm afraid, being a mere 35 year old, you'll have to get used to it! But what a great thing to be doing. And once the other members get past the fact that you're not 60 yet, and that you have some classy ink, then I'm sure they'll be really happy to have some younger members in the group! And don't stop! x

Might I suggest putting your camera’s focus on manual instead of automatic? Quite often when you bring your hand into the shot to begin painting, the camera focuses on your hand and makes it hard to see what you’re actually doing. I appreciate you sharing your process, thank you.

Hi Lizzie. Marialena's here. Your Gentian illustration looks perfect! Well these Paul Rubens paints perform very well and as they are slightly more mat they look better on the scanner. They also match nicely with the Stonehenge aqua paper which has very nice colour as well. Better than the Fluid paper. The Fluid paper scans have very high contrast, they have some sort of artificial brightness on the scans while the Stonehenge does not scan that bright. I think that you should keep this combination. The Paul Rubens paints with the Stonehenge paper. This is a good match.

Dear Lizzie, if you look up the opera Rose color currently on the Windsor and Newton site it is listed as a ‘B’- moderately permanent- same as Alizarin Crimson & Madder. It is below a I or a II of the national rating. It is one of the most fugitive paint pigments out there. Typically opera has a fluorescent component along with the pigment PR 122. It is lovely but you can get similar results by mixing PR122 with another high toned color. I will try to send you a mix that works for me. why not mix R122 with one of your Dr. Martin’s hydrous liquid watercolors? They are extremely brilliant and should get you a similar result. Good Luck SARA

Hi Lizzie. At 10.00 you say "Lightfast", I'm presuming because of the pricepoint that they are not very lightfast? Nice jacket, btw!
@LizzieHarperillustrator
@LizzieHarperillustrator 2 ай бұрын
Hiya, it's a good question. I'm not sure HOW lightfast they are (or aren't) because I've not done tests. Often, this seems the only way to be sure, However, I have a friend who has tested a similar sort of paint and she claims they ARE lightfast. The binder is not gum arabic, and I think that's what makes them less expensive than the Winsor & Newtons etc. If the paintings I've done with these disappear of the page into a faded blur within the next 5 years or so...I guess I'll get my answer! And I promise to add an update to the blurb under the film! Thanks for the question, it's a good one.
