In memory of my grandfather, Frank, "hewer of coal" in the 1921 census, who spent most of his working life at the Ocean colliery, Blaengarw and the Ffaldau colliery, Pontycymmer, died at 63 of silicosis.

In the late 70s and early 80s I was a brewer in Edinburgh and in anticipation of the Welsh supporters arriving in Edinburgh (a lot of them for the week) for the Murrayfield encounter with Scotland we used to double our brewing for a week a month before in anticipation. The Sales department would question what we thought we were doing and we had to say trust us it will all sell. It always did... Great days.

What they could never grasp (or maybe they could and just didn't care) was they weren't just closing mines and steelworks etc., they were decimating communities and whole areas that would never recover.

I'm 53 now and this tune has been with me most of my life. Its sheer class, and brings back memories of road trips where my parents had this cassette on a player sat on mums lap. Car only had a radio, these days of course we can magic Max out of thin air to listen anywhere. Thanks for posting this gem of a tune. Diolch 🏴

I was there. Never seen anything like it before. There were huge satellite dishes blowing off buildings. I remember it being calm then out of nowhere the sh1t hit the fan and it went completely dark. It blew over pretty quickly but did a lot of damage.

It’s not just because they closed the pits, but hey destroyed the community. Governments after could of invested in green factories in our areas but probably scared of our unions but should look to our work

I am not a coalminer. I do not know any coalminers. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. This singer is a miner of 8 years. Every syllable is filled with pain and there is no nostalgia. He is singing for me, for the hardship in my life, too. I have heard several excellent mining songs (sung by Dylan,Lightfoot,Travis,SteeleSpn). None of those songs comes close to this.

Newport boy emigrated to Australia 20 years ago. I watch them here digging high quality thermal and metallurgical coal off the surface, 10,000 tons before breakfast and realise that the Welsh miners could never compete on cost. It was then just a question of when the subsidies would end. It breaks my heart to have seen the heavy industry ( and the wealth and good jobs) die over the last 40 years but there are no easy answers.
