Seeing the versatile nature of these pencils, I've just treated myself to a 24 colour pack and am looking forward to discovering how they behave!! Thanks, Toby!😊

Interesting the idea to revisit different techniques as the flat brush... I kind of "forget" to use that one! Did I heard something like a paprika color🤔, I would like to ear more about this one please. Have a wonderful day

Thanks for the tips. The wet on wet/color first is most scary but most exciting. I’m new to watercolor (<6 months) but still have had some fun (and success) with it. I kind of wanted you to leave the trees on the left alone and NOT put a 2nd layer of color. They was so soft and beautiful with just the first wash. Thanks for all the tips that have given the confidence to paint!!

Lots of fun! Liked all five. Also thinking it helps to have an early visual concept/scene in your head, which then provides a little bit of framing to build upon on paper.

This is super helpful, and I hope it will help me to practice not overthinking things! (Good luck with that…) I’m traveling to Germany in July and would love to do some sketching since the architecture is so lovely, but the shape of some of the buildings is intimidating. 😅 straight lines I can work with but throw some curves and rounded bits in there and it ends up looking so wonky!

Thanks for this! One of my problems is that when I try to get really loose, I end up drawing symbols 😔Then again, I just realized that I avoid doing it for exactly that reason, so I have no practice. So maybe I need to heed your advice and just have a go at it rather than worrying about it so much lol.

Ha, that glitter paper! That's a proprietary Paul Rubens thing, but they do make a good 100% cotton paper sketchbook as well, which is very nice for the price. The glitter paper could be fun for paper crafters or fantasy world artists -- those lovely metallic insect and hummingbird paintings might be fun on the glitter paper, too. I feel like, from what I've seen (only own a PR sketchbook, which I like very much), the nicest thing about the Paul Rubens palette sets are the palettes themselves, which are very good for a modestly priced set -- the four separate mixing wells, for example, is something you usually only see in the higher end professional brands. The quill looks pretty nice, too, for the price point. Agree -- the packaging is seductively lovely, but unnecessary.

The glitter WC paper is a special product that’s popular with card makers or other more decorative painters, I believe. It’s gotten excellent reviews. I do enjoy the Paul Rubens journal-sized paper blocks with hard covers that have 100% cotton paper, and that paper is excellent, even comparable to the top makers of paper. They are a bargain. I’m guessing Bao Hong, a Chinese company that makes excellent artist and student grade WC paper, is the brand used in those PR journals. I also enjoy painting with the PR paints, which I use for practice, experiments, sketching or smaller works. I enjoy the smoothness and clarity, and they are at least mostly lightfast. I also feel freer when the paint is more affordable. They’re enjoyable! For more large scale pieces I use Winsor Newton and Daniel Smith mostly, with Rosa Gallery and some Sennelier on sale, and finally Holbein for some special colors and for pieces that don’t need paint that moves a lot. I’ve spent many hours determining which pigments/paints fulfill which purposes, and yet I also paint with a quite limited palette that can change depending on the subject or design. Paul Rubens are a watercolor I have an affection for, as I do my favorite, but very expensive in the USA, Winsor and Newton. Thank you for your detailed review!

Meiliang watercolor paints are great for sketchbooks. And the tin is wonderful! But seriously! Why would anyone think these cheap brands would compare to professional supplies? Lindsay the frugal crafter (Lindsay Weirich) has done extensive comparisons of budget paints and is very honest too. Thanks, Toby❤ Tummy rubs, Betty🐾🐾
