I have been thinking about putting this on my 5.7 liter merc inboard. Seemed like it was a very simple upgrade. Can you do a update? Has this been a good choice? The only reason I want to upgrade is I live in Alaska and I have had alot of issues with warm ups with the old carb. I sit at the dock for 15 mins maybe even 20 mins warming up the carb and sometimes still have idle issues. Have you had any idle issues after this upgrade? Thanks

I have had no issues. It starts great every time, idles smooth, and I don't ever kill it anymore. It was a great upgrade and I would recommend it. It was easy to do. I'm not a mechanic.

Not sure. We use the boat for tubing and water-skiing. I never tracked my fuel usage. Those activities take a lot of fuel since it's pulling hard. It's also never the same each time we go out.

Very nice. One suggestion: you may want to install a fitting to transition between the metal fuel line and the fuel hose rather than ring clamping directly to the metal line. This way it would be USCG compliant and less prone to leaks.

I did the same conversion from affordable fuel injection. Works great. Curious, how did you end up wiring your shift interrupt switch? I had mine wired up to the negative side of my coil to interrupt the pulsing. My ignition module (inside the distributor) recently failed after about a year of use and I’m not sure if that was because I grounded the unit (at the negative post on the coil) via the shift interrupt switch or if it’s just a fluke… curious how you wired yours up. Thanks in advance

I'm going to show my lack of knowledge on this here. I don't have any idea about the shift interrupt switch. I don't think I even had one. I followed the directions from affordable fuel injection and it worked the first time. I've run it now for two years and it works great. No regrets.

@@brianwindingland9595 interesting. My instructions didn’t have anything about it. You should have one where the two shifter linkages meet up on the starboard side exhaust riser, there’s a spring loaded mechanism that triggers the switch as you shift into neutral. I’ll maybe give them a call. Thanks!

I just added the kit too and my concern was the shift interruption switch. I figure over time it would create a shock to the drive. I was about to wire mine to break the negative side of the coil too. What rpm in water are yall operating at in neutral?

Holley sold a TBI kit like this back in the late 80's. I had converted my 84 carbureted Camaro. After a year the ECU failed just short of warranty so I went back to the rochester carb. It was a costly kit back then and a costly repair. Since this is unlikely a potted ecu, I would highly recommend you mount the ecu on rubber vibration dampers and mount it as high as possible as it likely will be exposed to moisture

I'll avoid the obvious answer haha, but it's for the stern drive. When you're going full speed across the water, especially when the boat is planing, it's incredibly hard (to near impossible) to turn the stern without the power steering assist.

@@brianwindingland9595 carbs usually only run at 6 lb of pressure and that fuel injection throttle body needs 32 lbs to work right .if you bump up the pressure you will get more power and better mpg because the fuel will have better atomization.

Great work! you can see the biggest advantage of efi over carbs is better cold starting and smoother running....too bad that you didn't have the best carb used on marine engines (Rochester Quadrajet) which has not been made since 1990, these when properly set up run almost as well as fuel injection, cold starts are not as good as efi but overall running and power is excellent. I have one on a 1988 4.3 same engine as yours but the older pre Vortec with no balance shaft. They are complex to rebuild for a beginner but once you do it, the next time it's easy. I think they are superior to both the Weber and Holley marine 4bbls. For carbs the cost factor is a big plus as rebuild kits are only about $50 and the older engines could use the simple and cheap to replace mechanical fuel pumps. Even the electric pumps for the lower pressure of a carb system are not expensive. Also, you might not be aware of this but I felt the need to point it out, those one piece exhaust manifolds are known as engine killers, they were cast poorly and have inconsistent wall thickness. When they fail (crack) they will put water right into a cylinder and rust the cyl walls and valves. Get rid of them before its too late. Barr Marine makes a nice conversion kit. Merc only made them for 3 years because of the casting problems. I had the OMC version of the same design on my 4.3 and never had a problem but I guess I just got lucky, I did convert it over to the later OMC/Volvo 2 piece exhaust style.

@@brianwindingland9595 I have a 1987 OMC 4.3 L and if you know what you are doing you can get a carbureted engine to run just as good as A fuel injected engine! When I’m say discontinued there one piece manifolds I replaced mine with a set of headers from HI-TEK Marine! They are made of stainless steel and are a direct replacement, You will save a ton of weight and you will gain a bunch of HP and torque! And the best part is you will never have to replace them again! What people do not know about carbureted engines is they do not run well with today’s modern fuel with ethanol! Which means you need to put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on your fuel line and set the fuel pressure to 3 pounds! I installed Hi-Tek headers in 1999 or 2000, They still look just as good as the day I put them on! I live on the East Coast and I dock my boat in salt water all summer every summer! Each header even has a provision for a pencil style sacrificial anode! They are worth every penny, Here is the link! www.hitekmarine.com.au/

How is the coil connected? Do you have a white and a pink wire connected to it? If so which one is on the + and which one is on the negative?
@brianwindingland9595
@brianwindingland9595 2 жыл бұрын
According to the install instructions from Affordable Fuel Injection: "The PINK wire needs to be attached to an Ignition 1 (battery power only with key on or in the crank position) power source. Ensure that this is an ignition 1 source. An ignition 1 source is 12volts available any time that the key is not in the off position. Also this PINK wire must have 12V while the vehicle is in the cranking mode (starting). This means the wire will have power when the key is on, or start, or back to on. Usually this wire can be taken from the power side of the coil (+) or the power from the old distributor or the fuse box. The system will not work if power is not provided to the (PINK) ignition wire while cranking." and "A wire labeled “CRANK SIGNAL” is to be installed on the crank terminal of the starter solenoid or off the ignition switch. A signal is provided to the ECM from this wire only when the engine is cranking. The ECM, to determine when the engine is cranking, uses this signal to allow the fuel pulse width to be expanded for cold start up fuel enrichment" So, my pink wire is on the positive side of the coil and that "crank signal" is on the negative side of the coil. I'm a shade tree mechanic, it worked for me. Technical questions, please reach out to an expert.
