Just found your channel Rob. I’m gonna do a month long trip down to Arizona and other states from Washington, thanks for the info. Looks like we have a lot in common. I’m 66 also, I was in the Yucatán early in 2024 , I just loved Merida. I don’t think a lot of people from the US realize just how big and varied Mexico is. PV was really enjoyable too. I can’t imagine why anyone would buy without living at LEAST a year in an area , especially when rent is quite reasonable ( as you mentioned). Happy travels ! 👍

I didn't see any tents in those 5 areas you visited are they out there and where is the best of your 5 to tent
@RobandMarvy3 ай бұрын
It depends on what you need. If I only had a tent and didn't need internet, AND wanted a little privacy, I would definately go to Craggy Wash and head up the road to Mile Market Three. Hardly anyone went up there while I was there.It (Like most places) gets a lot of drive through ATV traffic during the day, but overall, given the choice, that is where I would go.

Hi guys , I'm currently in a pickle and have been wanting to do this route (rt20 all west ) from Elgin IL to Eugene Oregon. How did you get the ok to be on the highway when they merge in the certain areas?
@RobandMarvy4 ай бұрын
@@ErikHernandez-z5r first of all, I only made it halfway...from |Boston to Valentine Nebraska, but I can tell you that I never had any problems along the way. I stayed on route 20 so I didn't get on any of the interstates and places where there might have been trouble. There were side roads that paralleled route 20. The police are very nice if you're wearing a vest or a shirt as a sign that you're walking across America. When my wife and I did it as an assist in the van and the police let us stay in their parking lots. Fire departments let us spend the night. They were very, very friendly so that was my experience. Also, I encourage you in Nebraska to check out the cowboy trail. It's about oh. I don't remember 150 or 200 mi and it's just no more than 2 mi off the main route 20 and at parallels it and it's a nice path and I'd encourage you to get on to that. Anyway. Best of luck
@ErikHernandez-z5r4 ай бұрын
@@RobandMarvy so a vest is doable and possibly can get a starting point of Nebraska kinda wild ... First and second attempt went bad but I have good friends who saved me,...tbh I am homeless and winter is ruff even with a place for the nights, I also would be towing a trailer with two dogs... (One Most of time cuz she's lazy) I've looked into the bike trails with no good routes to get me there in reasonable time. My big question to you Sir , is average each day how many miles did you actually walk .? And how many hours did it take to get that milage? 🙏🏾

Yes they do! Funny thing is, we now live in Mexio and so many houses where I live do NOT have hot water!! So instead of renting a house and spending the money on a hot water hear and it's installation, I just heat water on the stove, add it to a big bucket of water in my shower and use the camp shower. Skills learned while living in a van can be used elsewhere!

Rob you seem like a nice genuine guy but you got one thing wrong in your video. Your tent IS NOT free standing. You mention that a couple/few times. And judging from some of the comments I was expecting you to show us the process of using the lag bolts in that somewhat rocky desert. That's all....thanks.
@RobandMarvy6 ай бұрын
Yes, you are absolutely correct. I was referring to the fact that you do NOT need Guy Lines. (I explain that clearly in this video, but I did use the term Free-Standing afterwards.) But regardless, I stand corrected. As far as drilling the screws into the hard rocky soil. you just drill them. No special technique. You can see it in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqDdo4yJisaIe6s

Mexico is no more dangerous than the South Side of Chicago, but I'm not going to the South Side either. That said, your statistic that the United State has 3x the level of overall crime as Mexico is misleading as crime is underreported in Mexico. From what I understand its a combo of low levels of trust in the justice system and fear of reprisal. I think vacation areas and ex-pat areas are generally safe. However, being an American or driving a US registered car in many areas is an increase risk. Don't take my word, look at the US State Department for travel advisories on which Mexican states to avoid or to take precautions on.
@RobandMarvy8 ай бұрын
And I guess that is a point... people should stay where they feel safe. I also would never live in a border town or a Mexican city known for its crime. Also, as stated in my video, there are things you just don't do in Mexico...like driving at night between towns. So if that is something you plan on doing with US plates on your car...then I would again just stay home. Also you are absolutely correct that the number of unreported crimes is very high in Mexico. I took that into cosideration, but you failed to mention that accorning to the Bureau of Justice: in 2022, in the US, only 41.5% of violent crimes and 31.8% of household property crimes were reported to authorities. keep in mind that the US has almost three times the population making the actual numbers much higher. But even if you take the unreported crimes into consideration, and cut the numbers in half, the US STILL has a higher crime rate. Now I am not saying that it is "Safe" to live in Mexico. But rather, if you really WANT to visit or live in Mexico or any other Country... do your homework. Personally, I have had more issues with crime AND police in the US. (Maybe because now I am older and not worth the trouble to anyone) But as far as anyone wanting to move to Mexico... well, I really don't have a dog in that fight. Stay home and face the local statistics in your city, or find a safer Country. I agree that Mexico is NOT topping the "safest" list, but it is an incredible Country once you understand it and put everything in perspective. With over a million Americans living here... by the way some people talk you would think that these expats should be being slaughtered or raped or robbed by the thousands. Instead, they are eating great food, meeting new friends and living an affordable life in an amazing culture.
@delvinmorales94588 ай бұрын
@@RobandMarvy I agree with most of your points. However, considering that murder is more likely to be reported than burglary, Mexico's higher murder rate might provide a closer reflection of the true crime rate compared to the US. It does seem peculiar to suggest that one is more likely to be murdered in Mexico than robbed. I saw estimates that suggest 90% of crime in Mexico goes unreported. This underscores the complexities of comparing crime rates between countries. I could be wrong. there's people that exaggerate and there's people that downplay Mexico's violence and crime. Like in many places, violence tends to be concentrated in specific areas, and being informed about these regions is important for safety. Taking precautions, such as avoiding nighttime travel between towns, is sensible. Ultimately, Mexico's beauty is undeniable, but thorough research, reading travel advisories, and taking necessary precautions are essential.
