Despite this being 102 years old, this scene contains many of the tropes found in horrors today: confirming suspicions by reading an entry in an old book (sometimes it's written confession/evidence), and following that immediately with the character discovering that the monster is closing in on them. The door opening by itself and there is nothing behind it. I suspect these cliches may have originated here.
