@ChrisLarrondo i think a big part of it is that there's just too much to cover up right now. We knew the guards needed help. But now you're down to a rookie & the 5th OT on the other side at T. And pass pro isn't Brewer's top attribute. So it's just a lot to overcome

@gelandres2 күн бұрын
After all these years this team still doesn't have 2 starting caliber guards. The tackle situation was tough but at least Paul looks good. One of the problems I have with this OL is that they lack power. Jones has power and so is Paul but unlike Paul, Jones is not athletic enough. Eichenberg doesn't have power and maybe that's why he couldn't get the hand off his throat? I also think sometimes the offense is too complex at times and so I don't quite with the idea McDaniel has that we don't need really good OL. It's tough to run this scheme. What do you think?
@OLCoachSmith632 күн бұрын
@gelandres IMO, Jones is OK as a starter. If he's the worst of your 5, it's probably a really good line. This offense requires high level play at the tackle positions. They have that with Armstead and Jackson in the lineup- but too often over the last 3 years they aren't in the lineup. They've taken a step in the right direction with Paul - but they need to stabilize the other spot to 'fix' the OL

Really appreciate your videos and context. As a fan, it’s frustrating to see so much being left on the field and I’m struggling to understand why these lapses occur week after week. I know your data suggests there has been some improvement and consistency in the offensive line throughout the season. It’s the lapses in the other skill positions that don’t seem to be going away, unfortunately. It appears that has a significant trickle down effect. What do you do about that? Is it coaching? Lack of concentration? I don’t know.
@OLCoachSmith634 күн бұрын
@matthewtryon Appreciate you watching. I wish I had an answer on what to do. I don't think theres a simple 'fix it all' answer. The margins in the NFL are razor thin. No team is perfect, many have the same issues highlighted here. I think where the Dolphins have fallen short is playmakers making plays. When was the last time Achane, Waddle, or Hill just destroyed a pursuit angle for a 50+ yard TD? Where are the big broken tackles from Achane/Mostert/Wright to really excited you? When has the defense made a game changing play to score or create a short field? Special teams, outside of the Malik return? For me, that's what's lacking more than the minor lapses, which every team has - others just overcome them

One problem with these ratings is that they don't take into account the fact that Miami has had to abandon the running game, so players get graded based on Miami's ability to pass effectively, and we don't see much in the way of run-blocking grades. The running game has fallen off a cliff since Jackson went out, and in this past game we were just going pass almost every down because of that. So Lamm ends up looking good in his rating, but that inability to run is a problem.

I have a soft spot for Julian Hill because he catches so much crap from the media while Durham Smythe gets praise for his blocking. The coaches would never DREAM of giving Smythe the blocking assignements they give to Hill because he would be completely destroyed. Hill is two years removed from playing football at a tiny college and is playing in a very complex offense at a position where transition to the pros is challenging for guys who were 4 year starters at D1 programs. He has a very inspiring back story as well that makes it very difficult not to root for the guy. If the Dolphins have patience with him they will be rewarded.

Hey Eric. Thanks for the video. On the play @14:40, I thought Paul waited/paused to get eyes on his intended block before moving left, rather than to move immediately into the space and wait for his block target to arrive. I feel that by waiting to see his target inevitably meant that it would be too late to engage him. It's probably just a lack of experience. Am I missing something fundamental in this assumption? 👍🏻
@OLCoachSmith639 күн бұрын
@dundeedolphin without that hesitation, if a LB or safety knifes underneath to make a TFL, then we're ripping him for that. It's easy to look at it now and just say if he sprints for that cut off, he gets there. But I can't imagine that when they repped that play that a CB from the far side of the field navigated through traffic at full speed and was able to get to Hill, much less make the play. So, I think more than anything, it was an unexpected, fantastic play from the DB and I don't knock Paul at all for not being able to get to the block. Maybe my mind could be changed if someone found me clips of other OL making a block on a similar play where a player from the far side is on a full sprint over top, but I just don't think that exists.
@dundeedolphin9 күн бұрын
@@OLCoachSmith63 I think you've covered it. My only push back would be that, when he does move, he goes towards the player rather than towards the space. But I can accept that he had a duty to fulfil his initial role before shifting left. 👍🏻

@@dundeedolphin At the end of the day, I put it on Hill who could have either cut inside or hesitated to give Paul time to get back to his target. I dont think Paul has any chance to get hands on that DB with Hill going for the corner and may draw a block in the back if he tries. I would not be shocked if Hill has lost a half a step and has not accepted that reality.
@dundeedolphin8 күн бұрын
@dondajulah4168 A fair point. In his 3 seasons in Miami, Hill has shown himself to be largely unwilling to try to avoid tackles by changing direction. He has been a straight line guy. Waddle is not dissimilar. 👍🏻

I am going to stick up for J Hill here on the solo blokc. He has to move his feet quickly and turn his hips to seal off a guy that outweighs him by 50 pounds and ihas leverage on him. 91 has his hands into Hill fuly rooted into the ground while Hill is still trying to get his feet in position. No way that block is made if Hill is supposed to seal 91. Now if Hill attacks directly he leaves room for Armstead to help push outside before going to the second level but I dont know if that is an option on that play.

@dondajulah4168 🤝. He doesn't have to seal and stonewall the defender (that would be great!) But he has to at least maintain position & not allow the defender to cross his face. If he can't maintain that inside position, then he has to be able to generate some leg drive/vertical movement so that a defender that he gets inside position on doesn't basically go from backside D gap to frontside A to make that play.
@dondajulah41689 күн бұрын
@@OLCoachSmith63 Thank you for the explanation. Hill would have been better served trying to attack vertically but he woudnt know that the defenders first move was going to be to give up the inside leverage so he made an aggressive move to try to seal. Do you think that play should be designed for Terron to give help before going to the next level? It looks like maybe it was but the defender first step took that away. If that were the case then Hill would not need to make that attempt to seal which had little chance of success.

@dondajulah4168 that's one that when you look at it now, sure that makes sense - but what if the LB DIDNT? Then TStead may be a step behind. Great vid again. Gives perspective to show the Lions only converted 1 more than us. I’m bothered by 2 things, feels like are TEs screw up/are over powered cuz the play designs ask them to block DEs and NTs. That dude smythe was failing to block looked twice his size. To avoid this can we just bring in an eligible 6th lineman? Also, dumb fan perspective, would we not be better off to spread the D out on short yardage before we try to run up the gut considering that speed is our strength to create some room inside. Or if we are gonna bunch everyone in the middle and use a smaller fast back, use some motion to overload 1 side, and then have him foot race to the opposite side of the overload, not just run it up the middle into the pile like we normally seem to do?
@OLCoachSmith6312 күн бұрын
@BlackhelmetapparelUS Julian Hill is better than Smythe at those type of blocks. Unfortunately he's had plenty of his own hiccups that have made it difficult to keep him in the lineup right now. Agree on the 6th OL. I proposed the as a way to get Paul's feet wet when they drafted him. That question was asked to Frank Smith, and he basically said the concepts that teams run when they go heavy don't match what Miami wants to do (i don't agree, but that's the explanation). I agree with the idea of spreading it out to run inside. I don't like runs designed to the outside in short yardage because it opens too many chances to go wrong when you run horizontal.

Hey - big fan of this channel. Former college lineman as well, and when it comes to film just use the tight copy. Aj, eich and ingold were a relatively potent frontside combo in the run game to the right. Armstead is great but him, jones + TE (smythe/hill/smith) is not nearly strong enough to rely on. Left side was weak to start the season, right side collapsed when ingold and jackson went down. Nowhere left to run, and suddenly short passing is “an extension of the run game” Phins will need a high end guard to help paul when he takes over, and we need another tackle b/c armstead and AJ have injury history now. OL depth is important for 17+ games. Message to steve ross - invest in the OL
@OLCoachSmith6313 күн бұрын
Appreciate you watching! That's probably 90% of what I do. For this one, to show the yardage on the conversions, I felt the sideline copy was a good change up. IMO, there are more running lanes than what have been on display. Was it the same as when Jackson/Ingold were at their peak? Certainly not - but there are still opportunities that are being missed. I agree with an upgrade at guard (as well as many other positions). And I see Armstead & Lamm both retiring. So i think they'll need to add a vet OT who can keep it afloat for a short stint, like Lamm was intended, and also try to bring in a young guy who could possibly replace Jackson when that contract expires. Maybe a guy that could even start at guard & slide out.

Julian does stuff - specifically as an inline blocker - that none of the other TEs, including Stoll can do. Stoll is closer to Durham in terms of a blocker - which is not very good inline. I think maybe the team put a little too much faith in Hill being a 2nd year UDFA - but there's still a lot of potential there. Finding TEs that can win as in-line blockers as well as contribute in the passing game is not an easy thing to do. McDaniel has shown the ability to field a productive offense without that element - but for this offense to reach it's potential - it needs a TE that can win against edge defenders when the ball is run in that direction. Smythe, Stoll, Jonnu - etc - cannot do that consistently. Julian Hill CAN, they just need to continue to develop him and cut down on the mistakes. I viewed the TE position as 2 separate positions coming into the season.. Hill/Smythe and Smith/Conner. Conner is obvioiusly gone and Stoll is in there somewhere.. but I'd like to move on from Smythe moving Hill to inline TE2 and bring in someone else to let him develop in the background - but that's easier said than done.

All teams are going to do that. You could say the same thing every time Weaver schemes up a free blitzer also. The key is whether, if needed, McDaniel has the counter up his sleeve to take advantage of a defense guessing the play. I think he probably does - but didn't need to go deep into that bag against the Patriots. Hopefully GB sees that and tries to do the same thing and it results in a big play.

I would agree that Brewer is better than Pouncey. I think a healthy Conner was ahead of Brewer by a slim margin - but considering how things have played out - that wasn't even remotely a possibility - so the team made the best possible choice there. Smith has been on IR - and i'm not even sure that he's eligible to return? I've always liked Kion, but even if he is eligible to return, I would not look at him as a resolution at RT for the remainder of the year. Brewer has been a pleasant addition. Have to say the news about Connor Williams is pretty sad. Hope the man gets the help he needs.

@@dude9406 Yea, i wish nothing but the best for Williams. I get why Miami couldn't wait for him & that turned out to be a wise decision
