Small hooks are a real challenge. This is fine, but there’s little or no room for a knot. The Patriot and Salar hooks are well shaped for flamethrowers, but are a bit skimpy in length, considering there’s a lot going on with these flies. A lot of flamethrowers call for flash in the head, which can be a real challenge, specially when the head’s getting a bit steep, which is hard to avoid.

How do you do with terrestrial Beetles? Can I give you a quick recipe for an aquatic snail or water beetle? Mustad 94840 max size #8 Metallic blue peacock breast feather, any kind of black dubbing or yarn with a hint of sparkle Tie in the feather on the top of your black thread base. Leave lots of it trailing out the back. You will need it. Tie in yarn or start your dubbing and make a small football shape body, leaving the thread about 1.5 mm back from the eye. Gather the feather and create a shellback, two to three tight wraps, then pull the tips down and back and wrap three tight wraps in the head position. I tug the tips to spread them just a little. Form your head, tie it off and cement. Fish it very slow, in Stillwater. I let the breeze push it and just gather the slack. It is called the ILS

Des have you ever thought about a little head cement on the underbody before wrapping the Pheasant Tail? You do not need to buy it helps secure the wraps a little more. You do a nice job and a curved hook makes it better in my opinion.

Des I tied the Rusty Rat many years ago as my first Atlantic Salmon hair wing. The first three were me learning and all three looked somewhat different than each other. The one that got the best comments was not what I thought the best one was, which was weird. Did you use Grey Squirrel for the wing? I don't remember what I used.

No March brown, this is a HORROR BROWN. And with these long soft, fluffy hackles it is more a wet-fly, no dry. But still nice tying.

Silver doctor is a beautiful fly, I would like to see you tie it slowly. Not a speed tie but as it should be, a work of art.

Not bad for a speed tie

Klinks and compadun patterns sit just right in the surface layer. That and the wing post that can be done in different colours to make it easier to spot in different light and water conditions. Makes it great for stream, river, and lakes. My main tip is have that hackle post no longer than on that size of fly then after adding floatant to the hackle and post splay the post a bit more. One it makes it more visible it also adds more buoyancy. Two if the post is too long it will cause the fly to fall on its side.

I like it! Tail is a little thick for me but I really like the rest of it.

On UK northeast rivers my four go to drys. Iron blue. A variation with a yellow butt. Adams. All mainly para style. A Scottish gem. The Grunter. Except during a Mayfly or sedge hatch.

Great fly thorax can be peacock herl seals fur hares ear mole or a synthetic. I liked the way you secured the post to the body of the fly. Keeping bulk to the absolute minimum.

Pheasant tail nymph PTN is underestimated. One of the simplest and most effective flies ever tied. From tiny size 22 where the hell is it. Right up to salmon fly size WTF tweeny nymph. This fly in sizes 16 up to 8 will entice virtually any fresh water fish. Be it here in the UK USA be it lake river or stream. The right size and relevant variation of dressing presented correctly will catch throughout the year. It just screams I am food eat me. Can be used to represent buzzers olives mayfly nymphs. With adaption can be the emerging or dun of any of the above. A shrimp corixa stonefly or even a pin fry. When it looks like food and the fish are hungry. Do not over complicate things.

That foam adds a lot to the floatation and presentation of the fly especially in rippling broken water.
