I upgraded X and Z axis with right that thing a year+ ago. I was not happy, because there are 6 linear bearings and 5 (FIVE!) of them were seized. This causes non-linear moving - like that: ___. _______ where the dot is the pause and space is a quick jump. And a few days ago I finally replaced all 6 bearings I bought on amazon (I bought 12 because a lot of people advised that because of a lot of defective bearings on the market. It was 1 suspicious from 8 unpacked that I didn't used). So, who wants to replace X & Z axis, be prepared to replace bearings as well. Advice: to get a bearing out, use a head from a socket set. The one end of a part that holds bearing has bigger diameter, so put it inside starting from that end carefully, use a vice or the press. Oil pieces. And put the lithium lubricant inside, "Lt-43"-like. Good luck.

thanks for this video, I'm might invest in this upgrade as well, my X axis (sideways movement) has popped out a couple of times, sending my spindle to the extreme right! This aluminium setup looks a lot stronger. Question, how do you find the original spindle motor? is it worth upgrading to a faster / stronger one?

Don`t apologise for fumbling, it reminds us all of our fumbling's as we have all done it one time or another. A set of ball nose allen keys are great for such occasions when you don`t have clear line of sight to a bolt. As to the hight of the motor can you not slacken of those partially hidden allen bolts in the profile that hold the blocks that run on the round track also the threaded rod holder and move the whole carriage up, that should give you more clearance.

It is extremely critical that you get the 3 axis at 90 degrees from one another if you plan to actually make any parts to spec. If you are doing artwork, perhaps not. But to make parts that will fit together the axes must be trammed to one another.

I imagine the process would be the same. I havent seen a kit for extending the "X" axis. The problem I see, is that the "Z" axis spindle assembly rides on the 2 round bars and is completely dependent on them for support. Extending them in length will make them weaker and subject to deflection and vibration making your project much less precise.

u can also mount a 4th axis that rotates the spindle on its X axis that way u can adjust perfect zero and not worry about the angle not being perfect... u can do it in software. but its a headache to upgrade to something like that. also for more stability instead of the roller bearings... because u have the 20x20 bar behind u could use another 20x20 and 2 linear guiding rails and fix the bearings upon that ... and then u know for sure there will be no slack in ur Z and X axis movement. since now those 3 bars 2 for sliding 1 for driving are wobbly as hell especially if u want to increase the size of the spindle motor... from 10volt one that comes with it to a makita lets say... or even something slightly bigger... ul get 10 to 50x more vibration so the 3 suspended bars won't be enough. but at that point... just save 1000$ buy a 2500x1250 materials and motors nema 23 and just make ur own cnc ... and then u can do basically any material being aluminium, steel etc...

i swear the perspective shot makes it look like the cnc is the size of a house and that is a tree stomp lmao... but then u realize the scale its way way smaller.... got me tripping logs for a minute... its so odd looking. but since u upgraded the X axis... wouldn't that support a stronger/heavier spindel? im asking cause im getting my 3018 pro delivered to me tomorrow and i was wondering if i upgrade the X axis and the Z axis i already have a spindel for high torque somewhere at around 30,000 rpm heavy duty stuff... could that in theory be able to mill some 3-5mm aluminium?

Hello! You are really great at casting! I was wondering, if you are using resin to glue the resin "holders" how do you keep them from falling over in the mold because it doesn't harden right away? How does it stay up? I can imagine using UV resin for this but not sure how that works with say epoxy. Thank you!

That layer line or ‘witness line’ as you call it, visible around 15:25- have we found a way to make those lines invisible after the resin has cured? I’m doing a big diorama and I have to make it with multiple layers, so I have to do it the way you did the ‘hot glue’ method. Thanks
@sourlandwoodturning

No…I did talk to Alumilite once and they gave me very specific timing instructions for when to pour the second layer but it was still visible. That’s really why I spent the time working out how to suspend things like this. LMK if you solve it though!

Yes but not in one pass. You’d have to take a little off at a time and 1” feels like it would be the absolute max depth as the bits are not that long. Also, the type of “plastic” would make a huge difference.

how do you keep the sphere from spinning of the head stock if you are cutting in reverse? or away from you thanks
@sourlandwoodturning
@sourlandwoodturning Жыл бұрын
Not sure that I understand the question. The lathe is not reversible but if you mean when the I have the sphere cut off the chuck, then I am using a vacuum chuck which works incredibly well, especially when the sphere is wet as it has a rubber seal. LMK if I am missing the point and I will try to clarify.
@fightcancer9488

I may not be seeing it correctly. It looks to me like when people use the jig to do the delicate final sphere trimming the lathe is spinning away like bottom to top which I would call reverse. because normally when we do lathe work the chisel rests on the tool rest and the lathe spins what I would call forward or top down as we cut. So my question is which way do you run the lathe to trim with the jig. It seems to me like it’s bottom up or reverse. Does that make sense? Thanks

@sourlandwoodturning
@sourlandwoodturning Жыл бұрын
I guess you could either try it without one and just try to minimize the bubbles from stirring, or buy one! Be aware that you need a pressure pot and a compressor of some kind (although they're pretty small and if you have access to Harbor Freight then they're inexpensive. I made my pressure pot from a Harbor Freight paint pressure pot using instructions from KZbin.

@sourlandwoodturning
@sourlandwoodturning Жыл бұрын
Typically, I do not need to so long as the resin comes out of the straw cleanly. I have tried polishing them but, TBH, that's hard to do. Better off trying to get really clean tubes out of the straw. Mold release might help - I use that. Good luck.

I've a project I'm working on which involves suspension so thanks for the staw tip. Also I see many of the comments regarding visible lines. I have attempted many times to do multiple pours without lines and so far i haven't been successful. I've tried reducing the time I leave between pours and what I've found is that the weight of the next pour will press down on the previous pour and distort it anyway. I now just wait until its pretty hard and keep the lines. Hopefully one day I can master it
@sourlandwoodturning
@sourlandwoodturning Жыл бұрын
That's exactly why I worked on this alternative method. I was never able to make that line disappear, no matter what I tried. When I do this, I can do one deep pour, and it seems to work pretty consistently. If you are pouring over flowers (extrapolating from your username) then the deep pour may give you heat issues though...if this was easy, everyone would do it!

It's a Jet 1236 but I did modify the base to give it a box that contains three bags of sand to give it some stability. Seems like a good medium-weight lathe, although the pully-based variable speed mechanism sucks especially when it gets cold.

Thanks for all your hard work! The link no longer works for z-axis upgrade. But if you look at Wallyworld they have a bunch of upgrade stuff with free 3 day shipping (US). Strange place to find it. Search (z-axis upgrade) (x-axis bearings) Seems that there are 10mm and 12mm bearings. Genmitsu Aluminum Z Axis Spindle may solve clearance problems but they give no specs on the bearing size and spacing.

@sourlandwoodturning
@sourlandwoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
I use a pressure pot leaving them in for 24 hours to make sure that they’re fully set. It works very well and means I can use an attachment on a drill to mix the resin which typically would introduce way too many bubbles. If you’re in the US then you can pick up a paint pressure pot from Harbor Freight and make one fairly inexpensively - you’ll find KZbin videos on how to do that.

Very interesting. I’m wondering if you are pouring the scale/thickness of the straw based on the size and weight of object? I plan on pouring in quality mold to suspend small to medium flowers. and have read that layering the resin is better than pouring all at once? So much to learn and so many product’s! Thank you😎
@sourlandwoodturning
@sourlandwoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been asked to suspend some flowers today which is new to me so I might know better in a week! I’ve never had success with layering because I can see the lines between each layer but I know some people prefer that method and have it perfected. I’m expecting the issue with a 4” pour to be the heat so the flowers will have to be well dried. If you can use the stalks then you can use those to hold/hang the flowers in place but if you want the flower head floating in the resin then this might be worth trying. Come back and let us all know how you did.
