The blowly is normal, there is no smoke from the dipstick hole. That knocking " like" sound you hear when opening the oil cap is the camshaft in action opening and closing the valves.. that is why the ticking sounds. Normal. Enjoy the ride. Good for Oil catch can for your model. And install one if you dont have one.

It is a diesel, it is supposed to sound like that. It is normal. That is why it is called DIesel Clatter!. I think you are new to diesels. The engine seems to sound fine. Good Condition. main tip to maintain a diesel is 1. To extend the life of a diesel, always drive in the rpm range where the max torque is produced. Dont redline it. 2. Drive in low gears high rpm once in a while for few minutes on the highway to burn up the soot , or you will get your cat clogged by carbons( due to driving sedately). it is like manual DPF regernation in modern cars lol 3. Always change all fluids at the right time, especially engine oil. Use the correct weight oil. Dont go too thick or too thin. Change the oil every 7500Kms or less if possible, your engine will thank you. 4. Remember to change the diesel fuel filters at the right intervals, injector pumps and injectors are expensive in diesels, so always keep your fuel clean. 5. Then dust your air filters like once in 2-3 months . it will keep the filter fresh and clean for a long time. theryby saving your Mass airflow sensor related problems. 6. since you said it is an old vehicle, maybe clean all the sensors and reinstall, it will run much much better. Iike MAF , MAP, ARE BETTER TO BE CLEANED. IT IS GOOD TO TEST AND REPLACE CRANK POSITION SENSOR, CAM SHAFT SENSOR, COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. These sensors are subject to high head and over time they go bad and go off values. it is good to get them tested by a mechanic and replace if necessary. Performance mods 1. EGR blank- Block your egr for only fresh air to get into the engine, you will get much better throttle response and maybe fuel economy ( depends on models). but it will always keep your inside of the engine clean. maybe take the car to a shop and get to clean the air intake manifold and install EGR blanking plates. Google to find EGR block options for your model. 2. If your car is manual, Clutch delay valve Delete is a best performance mod. It is a small valve in the clutch hydraulic system. by removing that you will get much better clutch feel. 3, IF automatic transmission, change your ATF liquid. Changing the ATF every 30,000 kms will always keep your transmission happy.

Thanks for your informative post. Lots of useful advice. I’ve been advised EGR delete but also informed by some that it should be done with DPF delete as well and then remap to remove CEL. Can EGR delete be done standalone? I intend to install a oil catch can should the crankcase oil breather be replaced as well or just cleaned out? Cleaning air filters good idea but getting to them in m57 is a pain easier probably on the n57 I have too.

@@eddy45686 Doing EGR delete without DPF will cause faster regen cycles. Due to that you may have to drive often in highways and drive in higher rpms to burn off the soot. If your usage is mostly in highways, you can block of the egr with a blanking plate for like 5-10 $ or euros. that will be enough. If you are more into perfection and are ready to spend money, do a dpf delete and get a remap to turn egr off. Oil catch can is placed where the crank case filter is present. it will prevent the nasty crankcase fumes going into the atmosphere and will catch the oil in the fumes. and the air will be recycled by the turbo. Oil catch can is basically like a kitchen chimney hood, it will collect the oil in the fumes. oil catch can is safer in the place of pcv valve as pcv tend to get clogged and driving without noticing the blocked valve can have disastrous effects. Air filter it is okay to be not cleaned upto 20,000 kms if you are in a non dusty , less humid place. Other than that keep the battery in good shape. You will be good without much problems

20.000km since last year and sound is the same on mine. I can clearly hear a knock (think might be an injector even if all 6 are new) when I floor it hard at very low speed. Else no problems at all. checked oil for contamination last 3 times I changed oil and no metal in it nor diesel. So I just drive :)

Completely normal sound. I found that using Red Line 85 plus diesel additive (200ml per tank) quietened it down further.
