I wonder what the thermals are with the lid closed, particularly on the GPU side...
@TechLabUK
@TechLabUK 4 сағат бұрын
So far they are "ok", not great but manageable as long as you aren't pushing the system to hard. It could definitely do with an intake fan or maybe an upgraded exhaust fan in the rear but the CPU cooler seems to be holding on quite well.
@petros1815
@petros1815 4 сағат бұрын
@@TechLabUK The issue is that because of the tiny gap between the GPU and the lid, the hot air produced by the GPU fans can't go anywhere near the exhaust fan. The PSU can't help much, because they have very low rpm fans. So after a couple of hours of gaming everything inside the case will boil, GPU mostly. The solution could be to either perforate the lid or use a lower power ITX style GPU with a single fan, like 1050ti. I'd also check the nvme temps, because where it is placed, whatever airflow from the exhaust fan it has, is blocked by the huge sticks of memory. I have an older HP g200 minitower and I played with the idea of throwing a gpu in it, since it doesn't have any weird power connections or sensors on the motherboard and you can put any PSU in it. But because it is BTX, available space is even less than yours, so I gave up and I use it as a media PC, because it is so quiet.

@@petros1815 Luckily with the card we have installed all of the air flow is pushed towards the rear of the card through the IO shield / Vent and through the front where there is a decent gap for it to flow upwards into the rest of the case. We were quite fortunate with this one which is why I think it's holding on. The air pumping out the back is quite warm though lol

I'm sure with Thermalright there are a couple of affordable options that will work in that case for CPU coolers. Maybe some thin 92-120s on the front of the case without the drive and it's bracket. Could be awesome sleeper build. Kinda reminds me of my situation with the ThinkCentre M910t. I bought a Thermalright Assassin X 90 SE for 17 bucks and it dropped temps by 10 degrees in demanding games, also it has a 65 dollar proprietary PSU I'm going back and forth about getting lol. Almost seems stupid when I could just build a whole new PSU for that price for another PC Lol, but it would be a fun project like this. Great video.

If they use the same mounting as HP, it uses standard Intel skt 115x despite being AM4. Again, if it is like HP you just need between M2 16mm-20mm screws to mount the cooler to the backplate. On the HP with the ERICA mainboard I used a Noctua U12S. Could not close the side panel, but it was just for proof of concept. Worked perfectly other than being too tall. Great to see the Patriot ram worked well. On the HP it only liked one Geil kit of 3000MT/s with Samsung chips, out of the 4 kits I tried. Everything else gave audio error codes for bad ram.

Just found your video. Was running a Zotac 980ti AMP! Extreme from 2015 to early this year, was sad to see here go, she was amazing. That version of the card came with a factory base clock speed of 1253 MHz and a boosted clock speed of 1355 MHz. But my baby ran at like 1400MHz and 1500-1550MHz respectively, out of the box, no fiddling though MSI Afterburner. Had to slowly lower the core and memory clock speed gradually over the last few years as it would crash randomly. Got myself a 4070 TiS, unfortunately i rushed in without considering how hard my i7 6700 would bottleneck it. Her wings are clipped so bad, i swear i haven't seen her above 30 usage lmao.

Yeah, PSU saved it :D Ram wasn't running at full speed more down to the motherboard support tbh, they really do lock these down and give you barely anything to play around with, in fact the bios it self looks like it was made in the 90's lol. I will get a SS next time it's on for Discord to show you.

Great video, I love seeing these guides of how to really soup up a cheap little PC! I wonder if a newer BIOS exists that it could be flashed to this? probably playing with fire there though. Really cool to see the PSU solution as well, shame those are so expensive. I am wondering if there's enough demand to hardware hack some sort of solution for these and similar machines, it seems to me that the proprietary-ness of them might be able to be overcome but who knows. I guess even if this was worked out the problem of weird connectors would still exist, I'm pretty sure HP and Dell have used a variety of nonsense over recent years as well. Out of curiosity, is the motherboard power just 12V? it seems quite similar to some modern server PSU setups where there's just 12V and everything else happens on the motherboard. I'm also guessing that the 400W HP PSU was used in some of their higher end workstations?
@TechLabUK
@TechLabUK 23 сағат бұрын
Unfortunately I can't find any newer bios's than the one it's using which supports up to that 2700. Many people have told me they run GTX 1050Ti's from the 180w PSU fine so that might be an option or there does seem to be quite a few of the 310w PSUs about so that's another one if they can be found cheap enough.

Good video. The cpu is a fail. 4c's in 2024 is just a headache for gaming. On AliExpress: An extra $5 or $10 gets you a ryzen 5 1500x with 4 extra threads. An extra $20 gets you a ryzen 5 2600 with 6c/12t. Cpu's, especially AM4 cpu's can be the hardest component to change out. Unless you are dirt poor, I'd buy a ryzen 5 5600 for around $100 and build cheap around it. The other pc parts can be easily upgraded 1 at a time.
