La Ludwig shows a very German side of her top here

What a blazing white hor performance. So exciting. Amazing that with no real preparation Ludwig was able to give such a fully realized and impassioned portrayal. Ludwig, Vickers, Böhm! The giants of yesteryear. How we miss them.

Amazing performance! In her memoirs, Ludwig recounted that she was always very nervous singing soprano roles. But she’s marvelous here.
@GarthAstrology4 күн бұрын
Christa Ludwig is one of my very favorite artists, but I never warmed to any of her soprano roles. Even the Marschallin, which lies primarily in the middle voice, for me just didn't work because by the time she got to it she had put so much pressure on the voice singing in the higher tessitura that she lost a lot of the warmth and full control that she had in the mezzo range. She sings well here, but the soprano forays definitely took a toll on her voice.
@wotan109504 күн бұрын
@ “Mezzos who want to be sopranos.” That’s operatic life! Some of them can manage a few high notes, but it does take a toll on a voice that naturally sits lower.

@ Bumbry, Ludwig and Waltraud Meier are excellent examples of how the upward shift compromised their voices for the rest of their career.

Thank you for yet another rare recording from the good old days. Such a shame that this kind of great performance by some of the best opera voices in history were merely recorded by some microphone in back row at the MET. But it showed how great singers sang opera properly back then. Must be loud and strong enough to project the voice to every corner of the opera house and cut above the orchestra. Just beautiful. BTW, there is a live recording from Sutherland and Gedda at the MET as well.

Every young singer should watch this scene, because this is the goal. Both of these singers sound so fresh and their voices are so responsive at their advanced ages. By this time, McCracken had been singing Otello for almost 25 years, and the voice has barely aged a decade. Lorengar's voice has lost none of it's distinct characteristics while becoming richer and fuller. Neither singer ever forces. Neither singer sings without support. The diction is clear. The goal is to end a career like this with this kind of vocal capital still intact.

Even though Tucker never got to sing Éléazar at the Met, he did sing Samson! Thank you!

I listen to him singing in Budapest at the age of 67!!! His voice was like the Niagara falls! Huge! Beautiful! How happy I can feel for this opportunity!!! I do not want to compare him to "stars" like Domingo or Carreras (I listened to both of them previously), because Giacomini is a SINGER, maybe the last one and one of the greatest from the post-golden age, despite the two mentioned above. He is one of the most underrated tenors ever in my opinion. RIP Giuseppe! Thank you for giving us the beauty of your voice!

Caballe also had two years of abdominal surgeries, the first in 1974 when they removed a tumor. The second was the summer of 1975 where she had to have a full hysterectomy thus starting menopause at only 42 years of age. In spite of that, she still managed to sing beautifully for years. However, that had to have taken its toll on her support mechanism. I think she sounds better than most, and certainly better than today's crop of singers.
@promptersbox14 күн бұрын
I didn’t know about those surgeries. Wow. That is about the time she became inconsistent, but you’re certainly correct. The best sopranos in the world right now (whoever they are) don’t come within 100 miles of Caballe.
@SilfredoSerrano14 күн бұрын
Oh, right! Arroyo and Caballe were double-cast I think. There is a clipe floating around from this year same cast, except with Caballe. Arroyo was a beautiful singer!
