Cool vid. It’s relevant to what I’m thinking about right now. I’ve done JiuJitsu off and on throughout my adult life - never long enough to get to blue belt though. I haven’t gone in about a year but I’m thinking about starting up again. I have a few thoughts on this topic. First, totally agree with thinking about the legal aspect of things. If you train MMA and you end up doing damage to someone, the lawyer will for sure bring your training up in his case against you. It will seem like you were just waiting for an excuse to fight someone even if it’s not true. Here in the U.S. it’s the same with guns. If you seem like you’re obsessed with guns it will NOT look good in court if you shoot someone in self defense. Secondly, I think your advice is good IF the JiuJitsu school makes an emphasis to train JiuJitsu as applied to self defense. No schools that I have been to do this. I’ve been to a Gracie Barra academy, an MMA focused no-gi only school with a VERY accomplished MMA fighter as the head instructor, and an independent, traditional type of academy. In all 3, in the rolling time, we would not focus on any self defense scenarios. Maybe Gracie Barra in their fundamentals program has some self defense stuff but at rolling time, we were just basically are doing sport JiuJitsu. I haven’t seen anyplace that focuses on training to be an early Gracie fighter. And that’s unfortunate in a way because that’s what made JiuJitsu so legendary. But - it isn’t what wins medals at sport JiuJitsu tournaments so nobody really cares to focus on it. And doing all sorts of inverted crap is cool for some people (but not me because I’m a big guy 😁). My last thought is, do I really care about “self defense” or winning a fight? I’ve never been in a fight in my life. Honestly, it just hasn’t been an issue for me. I tend to get along with people and I don’t drink or go to bars or out much at night at all! Maybe I should just embrace sport JiuJitsu for all the benefits it offers. First, it’s just fun to roll and learn new moves! Second, it’s decent exercise. Third, there’s the social aspect. And fourth, it’s a competitive sport I can participate in as an adult. It’s gotten so popular over the years and there are tournaments all over the place. A person could incorporate traveling and JiuJitsu! Overall, it’s a great hobby. For self defense, I’ll get some pepper spray and since I’m an American I can get a concealed weapon permit and carry a pistol, or just pack it on the outside on my belt like a cowboy! 🤣
@robwilliamsbjj8446Ай бұрын
@@GenericHandle54321 after teaching for 30 years and collecting marketing forms from all potential risk and existing students the very first thing they train for is self defence - I think most people think that any form of Jiu Jitsu is self defence - they assume it is when often it’s not. Proper SD Jiu Jitsu is rare - in my Helio, Rickson, Pedro Sauer lineage it’s the single most important aspect of our training. Simple movements perfected so size of opponent doesn’t matter. Most schools don’t know anything about it and use “ developed attributes “ to ensure success. Strength , speed , agility, flexibility etc but they all finish with age and practitioners start to quit as they age because their techniques don’t work anymore against young strong fit guys - movement based JJ doesn’t really care as we’re not competing in those ways.
