Arches is like photoshop for watercolor. The first time I used it I was just blown away, I had no idea paper could do that. It basically autoblends. My "skill" level tripled instantly. The sad fact is there is simply no comparison between pulp and cotton.. I wasted a TON of money trying to find that magic pulp paper. Working small helps with the cost.. you can split a full sheet into 16 5x7 sheets.. or a bunch of other sizes. If I get a 9x12 pad I'll cut it in half.. and if you get a larger pad it's more cost effective as you can get more paper for only a bit more money. Until someone starts making paper at a lower cost we are just stuck. Bee paper is as low as it goes and it can be hard to get. I've heard countless people say pulp paper "is good for beginners" but they need the quality even more than a more experienced artist. It only makes learning harder and discourages budding artists who think it is their painting skill that is the problem. It's like suggesting someone dig a garden with a spoon instead of a shovel... yes, you can do it but it is a miserable experience. That said I do have a pad of XL, I'm currently painting a large color mixing chart on it. It's fine for experimentation, planning, etc. There ARE worse papers unfortunately.. I recently tried a Grumbacher that should be burned and buried under salt it's so bad. If you really truly have no other option financially try the Strathmore visual journals (better than the 400), or the Fabriano studio (25% cotton), or Canson Montval which is their high end pulp.

I'm so glad you left that boat issue in and didn't edit it out or make it sound like it was meant to be. I think many people don't try to watercolor paint or challenge themselves to try a bit more outside of their comfort level because they often see so many painters painting perfect. On a couple of my videos I leave my mistakes in and fix them or make them work, or work it in, and explain that's exactly what was going on and to learn from my mistake. I think when we do this, while sharing how we have painted something, I think it makes some people feel more comfortable.
@ShelbieDuvallArt4 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly! I almost thought about not acknowledging that I made that mistake but I agree 100% with what you said! Every artist makes mistakes.
