for bending and shear strain, where all should we keep the displacement gauge?

That's very unusual type of failure. Even though the crack started propagating from the middle portion of tension zone replicating under-reinforced section, it seems here that steel ruptured at the end which shouldn't be the case. The final failure should have taken place via crushing of concrete in compression after yielding of steel bars. Did you figure out the possible reason behind this?

I did that to an officemate and he quickly realized it, and he reported me. I switched 4 letters on his keyboard, and he reported me I poured water in his seat when he got up to get coffee, and he reported me. I spayed police-level pepper spray in the cowling at the base of his windshield so he would get the effect when he turned on his heater (it was a cold January day). He crashed his car on the way home and has been in a coma for months. (just kidding)

Does 30kN only equate to 3t? I'm not an engineer, but I find it hard to believe that beam could only take 3t. Am I missing something?

We should not consider the amount of force at which the concrete finally broke off. Instead we must only take into account the force at which the first minute crack appeared. Because in the real world scenario prevention is always the best option.

Hey fellow Aussies, I think. Nice video, I'm doing some study on concrete and reinforcing and my obstacle now is finding the tensile strength of reinforcing steel, do you know of any data sources that the public can read. Also have you done any tests with high tensile cable and pre stressing of it?Also what university if at all?
@robertmacan13518 жыл бұрын
yOU didnt wrote a yielding strength of reinforcing! Is it 500 Mpa or 400 Mpa. Because if it is 500 Mpa then this beam should take, according to EUROCODE, 45 kN of live load + self load before failure. I know that you did it according to Australian code, but i just say how it is according to eurocode. And please tell us a yielding strength od reinforcing.

I diid not expect to see rebar failure. I thoughts the concrete would crumble and the rebar bend

A universal modular strain sensor for steel and concrete Acousto elastic concrete strain sensors are used to detect the metrological Elongation or compression of steel building components as well as for measurements in reinforced and unreinforced concrete bodies used. The thickness of the sensor (diameter of the bolts) may be selected according to the strength reinforcement. www.ibj-technology.com www.prlog.org/12191357-universal-modular-strain-sensor-for-steel-and-concrete.html

I am studying civil engineering and have to do an essay on testing transverse and longitudinal loads on vierendeel steel framed beam. this machine is for longitudinal loads from what i see can some1 tell me how the machine is called and what test/machine should i use for transverse load? thank you

I believe the machine would do both, just think about it for a sec.

I'm studying reinforced concrete now, and this was quite awesome. The beam held more than one whole ton of weight above what the calculations suggested. I'd qualify this as quite safe. Anyways, since it cracked exactly down the middle and from the bottom up, am I right in believing that this was an under-reinforced situation and the momentum was what killed it?
@aleksandreakhvlediani8034 Жыл бұрын
It was tension-controlled beam, so tension in the middle bottom part where tensile stress was enough for ultimate failure of steel killed it.

This is great. But i have some question. In the table Specimen Compaction Data, I need to know where did you get the cross section, and i'm trying to compute 28.45 mpa but i couldn't have same answer. thanks
@chook214810 жыл бұрын
That is only cylinder compressive testing of the concrete alone, not the beam. As per australian standards. Target strength is 25MPa. The actual tested strength is 28.45 MPa for that cylinder.
