A candle with a pot on top is a fire hazard. Watch any warning youtube video. The fumes from the candle can spontaneously combust on build up. On the other hand, there are videos which use 4 candles in a specially set up furnace with exhaust and intake pipes which might work. There is another video with composting leaves heating a greenhouse which makes much more sense, as does using a dugout method to get below the frost line working with the earth's natural heat...

i'd be paranoid of a fire hazard

What if you had water surrounding it to help retain heat?

I have used candles under pots and it was effective and saved my plants. I later lined my green house with straw bails….i use the, like shelves and water right on them. They slowly deco, pose and create ambient heat. I never get frost in my green house.

Good decision. The main thing is that it brings results.

Things like horse manure or compost give off a natural heat which would seem like a better option. Another option is to have a wind turbine hooked up a heating element in the greenhouse, so that heat is constantly emitted.
