Thanks for doing this video! I was searching for an online converter of some kind and they are all terrible. This was easy and looks way better.

This tutorial explains how to make very specific tints and shades at specific percentages. Another way to access simple tints and shades of a specific color is by using the Window>Color Guide in Illustrator. Select a color and tints are on the right and shades are on the left. Keep in mind, however, that all colors will be CMYK process colors for both tints and shades.

I just graduated with a graphic design degree and they never really told us how to create shades and tints. Thank you for this video!

I found lots of videos making lighter tints, but this was the first explaining how to get darker colours (by adding black through the CYMK sliders) as the tint slider does not go over 100%. Thanks.

How about if you have darker color in CMYK color space containing K (black) values? Like some darker blues. Let's say blue that contain 48.5% of black? Adding % to that will not create accurate % shades. So this tecnique regardin creating "shades" with % values isn't the way PRO's do it. Olso you can just drag and drom colors to your Swatches window...

hey what about when i'm working with RGB? How would I increase the K when there isn't one?
@matthewlang14872 жыл бұрын
Start in CMYK, then convert to RGB once you've created your tints & shades. You can still use RGB values and/or HEX codes while in CMYK.

Illustrator has this well hidden! Helpful info on creating spot "Tints", although aren't your "Shades" actually process colors, not spot? Is it possible to use Transparencies of Black above the spot color instead? Thanks for your feedback.
@matthewlang14876 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct that the shades are really process colors as we revert back to the 4 color sliders. Using transparencies of black over the created spot colors could have a similar effect, but would not quite behave in the same way as the shades described here, and would not really be spot colors either as it's still one color layered over another. The process described here is more of a means to an end in working within the constraints of a limited color palette. The spot colors aren't necessarily intended to be used as "spot colors" in the Pantone sense but to give greater range in one particular color. We cannot add white to four-color process, just remove black, which does not have the same effect. The tints could just as easily be created using Global Process colors in Illustrator as well. Thanks for watching.

Thanks - But if you needed to do a logo using 1 spot color + Black, how would you create shades of the spot? Could you use a duplicate shape of black (above the spot color) with transparency set to multiply?
