No, your eyes are not deceiving you. That was John Cleese on bass, doing a special favor for Steve, who had an emergency dental appointment that day. Was it Coltrane that said, "Everybody would play like Stan Getz if they only could?"

Was so lucky to study flute with him in his older years. Love his swinging, crafted lines with a nice bright sound that rings out with the big band sound behind it.

I don't like Solar but do love Jackie McLean so wanted to see if he could make it good but he couldn't - it is too nonsensical musically - Jackie's phrases are all short and choppy.

I was taking trombone lessons in the 60s. This song was one of the first songs I learned to play . I loved it but didn't know the name of it or who wrote it.

Bumped into the Count on Michigan Ave in Chicago, sitting on a fire hydrant waiting on his limo...me and my boy were 15-16, he caught my eye because he looked exactly like my grandfather, dressed in the captain's hat, super clean. Tiny man. "Are you Count Basie?" "What you young cats know about Count Basie?" And we impressed him with our jazz knowledge and did his signature ending just to let him know. He laughed hard.
