The barbs at about 2:25 are the perfect response... even when he reevaluated and got shown how wrong he was... he STILL argued he wasnt totally wrong, because if you dont use the lathe... the other 4 functions bought as single function equipment fit in almost the same footprint (ignoring that the lathe he randomly chose to leave out for no apparent reason other than it totally ruins his argument would almost double the footprint)... and that you cant expect people to read setup or safety instructions... what the hell position is "most people dont/ shouldnt read safety instructions"? Blew my mind.

All that messing around. I would have bought a used Stanley Bailey plane instead of the Taytool. The Baileys are a tremendous value and hold their own against premium planes.

My father demoed and sold these as a side hustle in the 1950’s. Still, had his original Mark V when he died at 88. In all that time the only part he replaced was the toothed drive belt for the quill. I couldn’t wait to inherit so I bought my own. Had it 36 years now and it still works great. When not being used, it rolls away to take up no more space than a bicycle. The add on tools like the jointer, belt sander, disc and conical sander, planer and such all fit in a steel case cabinet. Yes- it takes time to set up when I need a table saw, or bandsaw. But if you do not have the space for dedicated floor tools for each operation you might need to perform, then the ShopSmith can’t be beat as far as versatility and usability. And it is way more robust than most tools made today.

John is a clickbait artist. Trying to make a name for himself. He could do the same with any product. I am amazed at nearly all the utube videos about woodworking (not Shopsmith) that show the users not using any safety equipment. I ALWAYS use the saw guard when possible, and will use the splitter if I can't use the upper saw guard. If neither will work then I find a different way to do the job. Shopsmith has done a tremendous job incorporating featherboards and other ways to safely hold materials. No other company provides the training and instruction about how to use their tools. If a user chooses to ignore all that then they own the consequences of their actions. I would highly recommend making or buying a better pushstick than the one Shopsmith sends with the tool.

I see.you have 2 shopsmiths why ? Cause you don't want to be spending time transforming instead of woodworking. Stop ✋️ kidding yourself

The single largest benefit of the ShopSmith is space-saving. The largest drawback is no jointer, no bandsaw and no planer. Those three tools are fundamentally far more useful for furniture making than a disk sander, horizontal borer and shaper.

I have that AI drill for 4 year's and i would never change it to a different one, there's three different types of DeWalt drills and fuck them,i better take mine AI from home, that locking and unlocking system is just superb. I've used 32mm drill bits without any problems, you look to much on numbers, never have i thought i need more torque! You better watch how you drilling or it can fuck up your wrist if it gets stuck. I have 2amh battery and I've put together my shed with one battery,i used 200 screw's.

Will the mark V accessory fit on the mark 7 machines? I wonder as you still can get some 2nd hand that are no longer available on the new machine.

Great Tools! I'm a retired Industrial Designer. I have the following WORX Tools: 4.5" Circular Saw, Multipurpose Blower/Sweeper, LeafJet, Hydroshot, Switch Driver, Multi-Tool, Cube Vacuum, Gutter Pro, 21" Lawn Mower, Trimmer/Edger, and Snow Blower. They all work well and are very well designed ergonomically. I will continue to add to my collection as needed.

As a new person to the Shopsmith, I actually found this extremely valuable! I think Shopsmith should have a straight up safety video like this. Also for little things I didn't realize off the bat, like the quill arm being moveable, and the quill being able to close the gap for smaller lathe needs (as I haven't had the need yet for either). Thank you!

When you disassembled the old guard, do you remember how the nuts and washers were arranged? The shopsmith diagram isn't very clear on there website.

One note with your grinding method. As you remove material from the edge, you are rotating the tool into the belt, and that will change the angle of the sharpened edge, if you are doing more than just a light 'touch' to it. I'm wondering if you made a jig to work on the table with the 12" sanding operation, that you could hold the tool fixed to the table, then sink the sander into the blade, and endure that you'll never be changing the angle by rotating it into the sander.

Just got one of these in a job lot. The plane has rust, and the blades are very rusty- even they ones still wrapped. Far from sharp! The blades are very thin, and I would expect chatter. The fence has very crude fixing, very much an afterthought. I have a Stanley #10, so unlikely to use this...

Seen several of your videos & each one has had some seriously good points - this being not to have a sharpening station where all your stones are locked into some kind of recess side by side. (It’s for sure a disaster of a way not utilise them properly)👍 good stuff Tom

Correct me if I am wrong; the tubes on the Mark 7 are stainless, the mark 5 tubes are plain steel and subject to rust if not treated periodically. Correct? Great vid in any case.

I'm sure there are plenty of lovers of this thing. I'm on board right up until the table saw! Something about that saw setup seems very unsafe vs. a contractor saw, or anything bigger. Not trolling, just seeing this as 1940's tech and enthusiasts who insist on using it still. Built like a tank for sure. And proud to see American Made still appreciated. Let's just be sure we aren't inviting new folks into the hobby to get hurt via the complexities of setup of this beast.

There were so many "start" and "download" buttons on the page, be careful with what you download. The name was Let's compress or something. so i didn't install that one, the one in the blue "download to pc" is called Inkscape Setup.

My takeaway from this video is that it is probably better to buy a better quality iron from elsewhere (unless your $$ are worth more than your time by a long way).

One slight gripe: four inches of movement is on the low side for a drill press. Not a deal-breaker, just a little annoying.

I have used the shopsmith to drill holes 48 inches deep. I just set up the drill as a horizontal boring machine and then I have the full throw of the head stock, Plus quill, as the length of my drill operation. That beats any drill press you can fit in your shop.

Millimeters or an inch based on 10s as found on an engineer's ruler are more accurate than an inch based on 16ths. The former are a LOT easier to work with and to achieve a greater accuracy when cutting pieces.

I am not very experienced with computers and have traditionally done my design work using pencil and paper. I would like to upgrade to drawing on the computer. It appeared to me your tutorial outlined how to create a view from one angle, which was impressive to me on its own. I envision creating a 3D model of a 2x4 piece of lumber. My goal is to be able to rotate, twist, and view this 3D lumber piece from different angles. Ideally, I would also be able to create and assemble all the 3D lumber pieces for my project, and then manipulate the view of the complete assembled model. Hopefully, I explained that, so it makes sense. Can I do that in Inkscape? Thanks in advance for your input.

John Malarkey is an idiot. KZbin still recommends his videos to me. It looks like he's devolved to buying TEMU tools and 1-star Amazon tools and reviewing them. He's a mouth-breather.
